Oh for crying out loud - those puppies are _animals_. Cruel as it undoubtedly is, you condemn an animal of greater intelligence to greater suffering by eating a bacon sandwich. A rant about what these monsters do to [people](http://www.hrw.org/wr2k1/americas/colombia.html) would be altogether more understandable. Regarding the so-called War on Drugs, the first rule of war is to do that which your enemy least wants you to do. Any ideas what “L” that might be in this case? ---

Decrease the consumer market by (properly) educating them about the dangers of certain drugs, rather than increasing the market value by making the stuff harder to get and produce and therefore only increasing the incentive for producing and selling drugs in the first place? ---

I would said that at least 1000’s on innocent people have died over the years due to the Colomian drug smugglers and you are worried about puppies :smack: :rolleyes: ---

I don’t agree that education is the answer, as, well for many reasons, part of which is that we don’t honestly educate people. The basics behind anti drug campains is that ‘drugs are bad’, while what is bad is the abuse of drugs. The illegaliaty of these drugs make them more dangerous and more addictive then they need to be. Drugs such as coke can be used as a stimulant simular,I assume more effective then coffee, that some may use to improve performance at work. Some may need a stimulant of some sort to perform their job, such as those with ADD. If such a condition is not properly diagnosed they may turn to illegal alternatives to self medicate. Education, to be effective (and IMHO), had to start from the premise that this or that drug might be useful for some of the population. The only other option I can think of to win the war on drugs would be to develope a bio-agent that would destroy the plant world wide. ---

I have to agree that, compared to what these people to do other humans, it’s hard to get worked into a lather about the abuse of puppies. ---

For the most part, drug mules are not _innocent_ in that they consent to the practice. They get a financial reward for what they do, and they have choices. The abuse comes from being an unregulated industry run by crooks (prostitution might be a good analogy), and a system that makes it easy to get in but difficult to get out. Puppies cannot consent. But really, I’m not affronted. Or [shocked](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=295483). What I really thought is, “Gee, this explains the _vast_ increase in puppies being taken aboard airplanes during the four flights I took over the holidays.” Silly me, I’d thought it was due to the [recent studies on airline safety and pets.](http://www.msu.edu/~silvar/airplane.htm) ---

Heh, that’s nothing new. About 10 years ago we came into possession of a very nice Paso Fino mare that had been seized by the DEA in Miami. She came from Colombia with a load of coke packed inside her. ---

I see and agree with the point that these drug smugglers have committed many more gruesome atrocities against human beings than they committed against these puppies. However, I’m going to give the OP the benefit of the doubt: I suspect that s/he isn’t unaware of or insensitive to the crimes committed against the people of Colombia; the fact is that this story (accompanied by photos) was recently in the news and it did tug at the proverbial heartstrings, what with cute puppies as the victims. Commenting about the atrocities committed against animals doesn’t necessarily mean that one is insensitive to the plight of humans in the same situation. ---

Well said **Cosmopolitan**. I’d also like to point out that there are people in the world (for example) won’t quit smoking to save themselves or their spouses, but are inspired to quit because of the danger to their innocent pet. It’s weird but it happens. A little outrage over the evildruglord’s use of big-eye’d innocent puppies might be useful. I only wish it could lead to the legalization and regulation of recreational drugs. It won’t tho’.
