In the “First Rule of the Maine Senate Race Club is Don’t Talk About Platner” thread, he is claiming Scoop Jackson as a “family friend”. Is this a new dubious claim or have I not noticed it before? Did Douglas McArthur introduce them? ---

Died during the KAL-009 crisis - got an Trident SSBN named after him (the only Trident named after a person - the rest are named after US states (the HMJ was originally planned to be named the Rhode Island, but Rhode Island got its own Trident eventually) ---

I think he would have been 20 years old at the time, so probably not. I don’t think he was doing any kind of “business trips” at that point of his life. So no, my dad is clearly not as cool as DD’s superhero typist dad. ---

PS: My father was a carpenter’s mate during WWII, but never went to sea. I work with a bunch of retired submarine chiefs, though. Never met McArthur or held the door for Red Raborn, though. ---

Oh, he most certainly was a nuke. He also went to nuclear power school before I was born. I remember he would have these little plastic clip-on badges he would wear that would turn color when they absorb radiation, as a simple way to warn you not to endanger yourself. I used to joke that my dad’s proximity to nuclear materials before I was conceived can explain everything there is to know about me. ---
