I’m in a weekly D&D session. We’re all in different time zones so I get that some people haven’t had dinner yet, but could you please just pop it on mute before you start eating? I don’t need to hear all the chewing and slurping. ---

Oh God, yes! If you must nosh, at least turn off the video! What about the people who are on Zoom on their phone and they put the phone on their lap, so you get to look up their nose the whole time. That’s fun. Sometimes I think people don’t realize they’re on camera and other people can see them. 🤦🏽‍♀️ ---

It is generally accepted in the meetings that I am in that any noises extraneous to the meeting will get you muted by someone. The usual culprits are eating and carrying on side conversations. It is usually pretty quick. ---

This is one of the things I love about the guild I am in. Everyone has (or learns) solid communication discipline. Our Discord server enforces push to talk, and that combined with the discipline ensures that we don’t hear eating, or screaming kids or the TV in the background. I can really notice the difference on different, more lax servers. ---

I remember pre-Covid, my company had an “All Hands” meeting in the main conference room. There were about 100 people present, and a few on Zoom. The VP spoke for a little bit, then when pausing to start the next section, we all heard a toilet flush. Everybody laughed, and the VP smoothly reminded everybody to use mute before going AFK. ---

When the lockdown first started we had synagogue services over Zoom and lots of people were on their phones. The rabbi reminded people that if they had to leave the room \ NOT to take their phone with them. Even on mute, there’s still video. Ewww. Best to leave the phone at your desk. ---

I attended zoom Yom Kippur, and there was a guy reading the newspaper. You know, you didn’t need to log in at all. And you can turn off your video. But it feels pretty disrespectful to broadcast yourself ignoring the service. As for eating on zoom… I agree that people should mute while slurping, but at something like a d&d game, I’d just as soon they leave the video on, so i know they are still there. I mean, they’d be eating chips if we were meeting in real life. Why not eat supper when meeting remotely? ---
