The guy hit the brakes, and the dog slid _backward_??? That is the most amazing thing I’ve ever read in my life.

Generally when unsecured items are in a vehicle that hits the brakes they will tend to slide forward (towards the cab). When unsecured items are in a vehicle that accelerates they will tend to slide backwards (towards the tailgate).

What **Frank** is asking is how did the dog slide backwards (into the tailgate) when the driver braked (broked?)?

It would violate [Newton’s First Law of Motion](http://www.glenbrook.k12.il.us/gbssci/phys/Class/newtlaws/u2l1b.html), for one thing.

In this case, the dog is moving in the same direction as the truck, and will keep doing so until he hits the back of the cab, not the tailgate. Unless, as has been noted, the truck were moving in reverse.

ITT: Newton disproved by dog.

I’m don’t know anything about physics. Maybe the guy sped up rapidly after breaking. Or it bounced off the cab and then back to the tailgate.

I just know that the dog hit the tailgate, bounced around, and looked like it’s next step was going to be in front of my car. It scared the shit out of me and my kids. It scared the dog too–or hurt it–because it wasn’t standing in the bed anymore after that; it was laying down.

> On a side note, saw a truck get pulled over the other day for the passenger holding a baby, not in a car seat, as the pickup pulled into a friends or relatives house right across from the shop. Much arguing ensued, backup called, 1/2 hour ordeal, ticket issued. After the cops left, people piled into the front of the truck, the mom still holding the baby got in the bed of the truck, sat on the bedrail and they drove off. Words totally escape me on this one.

I think they just decided to break the law as flagrantly as possible in a passive-aggressive protest. It’s a “you wanna give me a ticket? I’ll give you a reason to give me a ticket” mentality. Not at all logical, but sometimes emotionally satisfying.
