On my last car (a Smart) and current car (a BMW) the fuel door is locked when the car is locked and unlocked when the car is unlocked. No remote releases needed, simple and elegant.

I’ve had the exact same experience. My family’s various 80’s through 00’s Fords have never had a locking gas door. The only car I can think of that may have had them were the early 80’s Buick boats my brother had for a while.

My '96 Contour has a locking gas door with a release on the floor next to the driver’s seat.

Funny you mention that model; that was the same as mine, with the gas latch that failed.

That would annoy the crap out of me for the first few tanks of gas. As soon as I get out of my car and close the door I reflexively hit the lock button on my fob. I regularly get out of my car and by the time I get to the hatchback to unload whatever I bought I’ve already locked it.
