Dang, even as a guy myself, I don’t understand guys like that. A couple years ago there was a cute girl working at a store I patronize regularly, and through our interactions over time I sort of got the impression that she _might_ be interested in me (I based this partly on watching her bored interactions with other customers while I was waiting, and the way she would genuinely “light up” when _I_ came to the counter). But dang it, I just could not get past the “social contract” that says you don’t hit on a woman while she’s at work and basically “trapped” behind the counter. So I was left hoping that maybe, someday, I’d bump into her outside of her job. Never happened, though. Sigh.

> See, we’re reading this differently. You’re reading it that she was getting her ass beat. I’m reading it that she was kicking ass, possibly up to and including the day when a thug was hired. I say possibly because she stopped there and made no mention of the the KGB, the Gambino Family, or the Bolivian Army coming into play.

Or the cocky little Irish prick with a dartboard tattooed on his forehead.

Thing is, it seems to me that getting bullied is nonlinear. A kid who gets bullied is more likely to be bullied in the future. Some kids never get bullied. Most kids get bullied rarely. Some kids get picked on all the time. This is because, when bullies look around to see who to bully, they tend to watch the outcome of various bullying incidents, and choose to victims accordingly.

Hey, I’m raising a glass to you and any other Real Gentlemen left in the world.

But it’s a really tough call to tell if a server is interested. Because the person behind the counter IS being interested in you, IS being nice. But the tricky part is… they’re getting paid to be nice to you.

I always remember [the Onion article that a friend of mine has posted at work.](http://www.theonion.com/articles/sources-barista-not-actually-flirting-with-you,5761/) She’s a barista, and has the article (“Barista Not Actually Flirting With You”) stuck to her register, where all her customers can see it. Gutsy.
