Politicians are a slimy lot but Mitt Romney exceeds historical norms. Here’s the interesting part: he came through the Republican primaries looking like a douchebag only to be hammered by Democrats for months thereafter, so his flip-flopping, lying, and vulture capitalism “career” were all on the record. But notwithstanding all of that, I was piqued by the Republican convention and the debates. What kind of guy was this, really? Forget the soundbites, forget the super-PAC hit-jobs. Turns out Mitt Romney is an even bigger asshole than I thought. This is a guy who was born with a silver tea service in his mouth to go with the silver spoon. He leveraged his membership in a wealthy cult to avoid military service (oh, and so did his sons apparently, but they’re not part of this pit), used a platinum-plated education not to build but to exploit, and has used his wealth and connections to gain political office. And guess what? When he opens his mouth it’s all there. This guy is so transparent you could use him as a skylight. From basing an entire convention on an erroneously parsed quote (“you didn’t build that”), to condemning 47% of the US electorate as Lysol-swilling hobos, to exploiting the deaths of US diplomatic personnel for cheap political points, this is a person prepared to sacrifice everything – even the best interests of his own country – to win an election. I’m sure Mitt Romney sleeps peacefully under his 400-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, knowing in his heart that the ends justify the means, that the hoi polloi are merely the electoral grist for his political ambitions, and that he’s entitled to the presidency by virtue of good genes, clean living and intellectual superiority. But in my book he’s an exemplar of everything that’s wrong with the US: unbridled greed, desperate ambition and crass opportunism, not to mention a serene and Zen-like acceptance of dishonesty as legitimate social interaction. Every person, and therefore every politician, is flawed. But even a flawed leader can inspire through example, strive for the common good, or try to raise people up. Think Lincoln, Churchill, Roosevelt, even Johnson or Kennedy. Mitt Romney is no Jack Kennedy. More like a jack-ass. And for all of these reasons, I pit Mitt Romney. ---

They just had to not join. Romney’s eldest son was in diapers when they abolished the draft. What was there to avoid? ---

We have some higher end sheets that are 600 thread count, and when we bought them there were 1000 TC available as well. A good sheet is a thing of beauty, sleep wise. ETA: but other than that, yeah, fuck Mittens. ---

We all pretty much knew it was Romney…what?..six months ago or more? The Republicans didn’t put forth their best candidate? They did. And there he is. ---

Willard is an infant. It appears to be a congenital condition. Some people fail to establish the ability for emotional growth because of substance abuse – we had a prime example of that in the WH not too long ago – but Willard has been clean in that respect, so one can only conclude that it was either in his makeup or perhaps an effect of being raised in wealth (e.g., Ms. Hilton). His most recent debate performance displayed his immaturity for all to see. Another recent example might be the grocery store photo op where he appeared wholly clueless about a basic life function. Not sure about the 844 vetoes as governor (84% override rate), but it sure shows an inability to work with others, especially when it starts to piss off your own people. A little further back is the notorious Bain photo with the cash spilling all over the place. Whatever the cause, the result is not good. We know what it is like to nurse a spoiled toddler through the whitehouse, is that something we want to do all over again? Still, it does seem a bit unfair to pit a child, he cannot help it and he seems wholly incapable of defending himself. ---

Romney’s first son, Taggart, was born in 1970. When conscription ended in 1972, Taggart was just one or two years old. Good thing the kids aren’t part of this pitting, yet you really did put them in it and whine about them somehow “leveraging their membership in a wealthy cult” to somehow avoid conscription that simply did not exist at the time the sons were 18 years old. By the way, if “membership in a wealthy cult” could be leveraged so well for avoiding conscription, pray tell why that same “cult” agreed to limiting the number of its membership who could go on a mission when conscription existed? Seems to me that if you’re going to blast someone about dishonesty, you just might want to be factual yourself. But, hey, to each their own. ---

Yeah, I thought most of it was fair until I read the thread count comment. 400 isn’t even that good and I applaud him for his rugged endurance if his are that low. I have 700 thread count sheets myself (Egyptian cotton of course). Does that male me almost twice as evil? ---

Far be it from me to speak for the OP but the big difference between the Romneys and someone who _was against the war_ and didn’t serve is that the Romneys were all for war; all long as someone _else_ went to fight it. Being a conscientious objector is a bit different than being a chicken-shit coward. ---
