[/QUOTE] When the head gasket blew on my Dodge Shadow, this was the assessment my mechanic gave me as well, so your dad’s probably not too far off the mark. My mechanic didn’t use the words “blow up,” but he did say the car could catch fire at ANY moment and I would be wise to get rid of it as soon as possible. After several tears (and prayers that the car would make the 15 mile journey to the dealer I bought my new car at), I did just that. As for the Cavalier, 198,000 miles is a lot, but $300 probably isn’t a bad deal. If you haven’t decided already, I say go for it. ---

At my place of employment, the last time a worker was cited for using the term “jiggaboo” within earshot of people of color (among others), he ended up with a 3 day suspension. The rule violation was “ethnic disparagement and creating a hostile work environment”. The union made only a minimal defense because they knew there was no way to win this one. ---

Okay, I got that “jigaboo canoe” was meant to signify a lesser monstrosity than a “pimp-mobile” or a “pimp land yacht.” I actually thought it was clever in a way. **Captain C** , are you black? If not, I can see where people are getting up in arms (though I’m not- there was no malice intended so I’m giving you a pass). ---

From the parental view: Child, if you didn’t want my opinion/advice/lecture then you should not have told me the stupid thing that happened in your life. As soon as you ask for advice/whine about your circumstance/mention anything, it is my parental responsiblity/joy to tell you what I think. And I think you are a bonehead for driving a POS/moving into a shithole/changing majors/dating that person. I learned long, long ago never to tell my parents my problems unless I was willing to take the lecture that went with the possible help. And I understood that parents have long memories and until the problem was solved, they would want to know about it, and would want input in the solution. How I wish my daughter would learn this lesson as well. Don’t vent/rant/whine around your parents about your problems, at least not until you are well beyond the age where they think they might be able to “help.” That might not be for quite some time yet…say your late 30s. Save your venting about and requests for assistance in solving life’s little difficulties for your friends, SO, and fellow Dopers. ---

Okay, so I’m not exactly the best person to be giving advice about cars, but honestly? Even if your coworker’s car is near the end of its life, it sounds less dangerous, from an immediate perspective, than yours. My only concern would be to talk to your coworker and make _sure_ there aren’t any problems with his car that you don’t know about. 'Course, you can get the same problems from a dealership, too, so really it’s all a gamble anyway, and I’d say it’d be much smarter to remain out of debt for as long as possible. I somehow doubt car payment loans are all that forgiving. ---

The way it works with my folks is that they nag me to have something done and I say “ok well if you want to pay for it then I will do it.” This shuts them up 99% of the time and 1% of the time they pay for it. It’s a win/win situation! ---
