Ah, but has she lost his number? Hmm? Not entirely out of the Pit yet, I think.
Well, actually she and my mother are arguing again. Kathy is trying to convince my mother to go volunteer at one of the Montgomery evacuee shelters “cause it’ll show her there are people worse off than she is and get her out of that house and she’ll even meet some people”. My mother doesn’t want to- she’s given money and has a lot of household items (most of them good) to donate, but “I don’t wanna go work at an evac shelter. I know good and well there are people worse off than I am. It just makes me know I’m being self pitying in addition to depressed which just ends up making me more depressed. Lord, your sister is the only person on Earth who thinks somebody should fight depression by surrounding themselves with people who are more depressed than they are.”
Kathy: Well, you’ll meet some people and make some friends.
Mama: People without houses… not like we’re gonna be inviting each other for dinner. You wanna come to my house for pot roast or want me to come to your shelter?
Kathy: I’m talking about the people who are working there.
Mama: Oh, those do gooder blue hairs at (insanely-popular-church-in-Montgomery) are all snobs.
Kathy: Then go to the shelter in (blue-collar suburb of Montgomery).
Mama: And be around white trash I worked my ass off to get away from, no thanks.
So the family WHY DON’T YOU/YES BUT Olympics continue. (My mother really is concerned and really is donating money and items to the effort, but working with other people is just something she doesn’t have a particular interest in.)
Whew! That makes me feel better.
Me neither. I don’t blame her for feeling the way she does. Some people don’t like being around others, regardless of whether or not they’re snobs or “white trash”.
For me, it’s better to just donate.
Something occured to me this afternoon as I was making large amounts of baked beans for a cookout at my church. Sampiro’s brother is an Auburn fan. So his hotel rooms were in Opelika/Auburn. Auburn lost Saturday night. To Georgia Tech no less. I’m sure that made brother feel real bad. So at least that’s something. Or maybe I got overwhelmed by all those onions I chopped and don’t know what I’m talking about.
Also, good on Sampiro mom for donating. Volunteering is not for everybody and donations are needed just as much as are volunteers.
Three out of four of ya done good. Not too shabby.
