Oh yeah? My mom didn’t sell her hair, she cut it and knitted it into socks for us. That was the warmest Christmas ever!

I feel kind of bad for her, but if you make a big deal out of telling everyone how much you’ve changed, well, 1) you’re kind of bringing that kind of scrutiny upon yourself, and 2) perhaps you shouldn’t start start off your new, improved lifestyle by posting the exact same annoying bullshit that pissed people off in the first place.

I don’t think the response is overly surprising, even if it maybe is kind of harsh. Personally, refraining from opening any thread where she asks for advice has eliminated 90% of my annoyance with her antics.

I think this is the bottom line. Most of us acknowledge that there are lines we shouldn’t cross; if you are incapable of telling where the lines are, maybe you need to put some procedures in place to help you with that; it’s not like the internet is going away any time soon.

We all say dumb or embarrassing things occasionally; most of us don’t make a lifestyle of it, though.

There is almost no cahnce that your son is going to grow up with a sense of entitlement and expect the world to give him nice things just because he wants them.

I am having the same problem with my wife’s desire to make sacrifices our son. not so he can have books to go to school, or so he can have clothes to wear but instead, she is making sacrifices so he can have a playdate with some kid that lives 20 miles away or stop having sunday brunch (which she really enjoys) so he can go to an overpriced version of Gymboree or start looking at homes with (or near) stables (and consequently increase my commute by an hour) so you can buy him a fucking pony.

At some point I think our son would be better off if his mother cared more about herself and a little less about him. Why do some moms do this? Its not good for your child.

At think it has to do with biology.
Have you noticed folks telling each other how beautiful and intelligent their children are? No Mother ever says, “Dear G-d, I have the ugliest child in the city!”

I agree there are lines. But I don’t personally think that being a careless idiot is notable worse than being a belligerent asshole. It’s probably not as personally damaging or foolish as naked pictures, but I think there are a hundred people on the SMDB who’d be embarrassed if their long history of hurling vicious insults at strangers was attached to them. I guess being smart enough to stay anonymous is worth something.

Yeah, and not everybody knows where those lines are, and some of us don’t understand why those lines exist in the first place and only accept them grudgingly and imperfectly. And none of these facts make this level of cruelty and nastiness defensible. Over the years here I’ve seen plenty of jackasses basically justify their jackassery with, ‘‘Well, that’s what happens. It’s the internet.’’ Really? The internet _made_ you (general you) act like a dickwad? It absolves you of responsibility for your behavior? No.

Deary, it isn’t that these people think nice gifts have to be expensive, it is that Opal solicits shopping advice and is massively dismissive toward the input she gets.

As always with these requests there were many great suggestions meeting the criteria and as is Opal’s way, additional reasoning is trotted out to dismiss most of them in kind. Attempts to help her identify what the recipient might enjoy were brushed aside as well.

Basically it boils down to not being able to help those who aren’t open to assistance. After trying to be helpful in several of these threads of hers and all going the same way, I am convinced she starts these threads simply so we can marvel at what great gift ideas Opal has.

Deary, I get what you mean and also find Opal’s attention-seeking behaviour highly irritating. My post wasn’t meant as a defense of Opal so much as it was a reaction to Clockwork Jackal’s earlier post (which I found to be rather snobby and ridiculous). (A mild hijacking, in other words.)

I get where you are coming from. Just wanted it to be clear that her desires in these sort of requests usually outpace her budget so you get a lot of comments along the lines of,
“That’s the right price but not quite what I want.”
“That’s what I want but too expensive.”

After the cycle gets repeated several times in various iterations, it isn’t surprising that some get fed up and tell her that her budget isn’t realistic to her desires.

Hell I nearly hit a home-run in the earrings for mom thread. Acceptable style, color, material, price… just not large enough apparently. Of course being small was necessitated by the price point. :-/

For my part I learned my lesson and won’t participate again. As the saying goes. You can please some of the people some of the time, but there is always that one pain in the ass that you can’t please no matter what the fuck you do.

I meant the lifestyle that she seems to have made out of over-sharing here. I guess describing her bowel movements and sex life to us is in detail is okay, but looking at naked pictures of her that are on the internet (and not very well secured) isn’t. It’s hard to tell where the line is if someone dances back and forth over it.
