Walking while playing with their phone… meh. You just look like a douche bag and eventually you’ll walk into something hard and give us all a good laugh. I reserve my loathing for the asshats driving while using their phone. ---

I actually had to train my mother when she got her smartphone. The correct method is: 1. Look for tucked away spot. 2. Go to spot. 3. Stop. 4. Take out phone. 5. Use phone. 6. Put phone away. 7. Check for oncoming pedestrians. 8. Resume walking. She had a fair number of bruises before I trained her. While it was amusing to watch, somebody else was going to get hurt eventually. ---

I feel like malls should have signs or volunteers or something, advising people on how to mess with their cellphones (especially during the Christmas Crowd season): - LOOK WHERE YOU ARE GOING! - WHEN TAKING OR MAKING A CALL OR TEXTING, DON’T JUST STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MALL. MOVE OFF TO THE SIDE OR YOU _WILL_ GET RUN OVER! ---

In the era before smartpnones, I would often read a book while walking. I trained myself to look up every few seconds and to stop reading if I was crossing a street or walking near others. People who saw me do this were utterly astounded I could do it without faceplanting every 3 steps. Now everyone on the sidewalk does it, though most with less situational awareness and concern for safety.
