Many US State- CA included- have such a mandatory deposit. It not only helps with the litter problem, it gets more crap recycled. Although I hardly excpect Pepsico, Coke and company to get happy about such an idea, I do think it is wrong of them to be obstructionistic and oppose it.
I certainly agree that the the OP is wrong about getting the various soft drink makers to clean up after the various slobs who litter. But asking the companies to stop opposing a mandatory deposit law is reasonable.
Local bars here still do this last time I heard I used to go buy the “returnables” for mead bottling from a couple of the local bars. Took them home, soaked in bleach water, rinse, fill with heavenly peach melomel.
Not for a minute would I insult the Mexican people - I have nothing but good things to say about them…they’ve always treated us well.

This particular area is a fair distance from any major centre. It just seems that the pop people have an opportunity here to do something and have chosen not to. No, I suppose it’s not their entire responsibility however they are responsible for the production of the product so could conceivably contribute to the disposal of the container by encouraging recycling…again, if they have to make the trip along the highway to deliver and maintain their products and incentive items, why can’t they organize a recycling idea only because they have the financial backing and corporate know how to do so.
Employment in Tel Chuc, since fishing has deteriorated, is nearly zero. From what I understand, there are people who go roadside to collect the bottles and sell them to the recycler but on a small scale. Probably a good opportunity to be a good corporate citizen, is all I’m saying.
All bottles and cans should be returnables. Our parks are being litterered with water bottles which have no return. The pop and beer cans have been gone for years. People are dumb enoght t o buy water are and are too stupid to toss plastic bottle in trash.
NAFTA sucks. It doesnt promote free trade .It promotes lower wages. No environmenntal and wage protection were included.
