Excuse my ignorance, how do you make a legal left turn on red? Are there some states where you can turn left on red?

In some states, yes, if both streets are one-way and your turn would not put you traveling the wrong way on a one-way street. I would wager this is true in most states where “right on red after stop” is legal unless otherwise posted.

Are they? I’ve only heard the subject brought up as a joke on the Simpsons. No PSA or bike retailer ever advised one way or the other that I’m aware of. And no, bikes status as vehicles wasn’t either.

I’m waiting to get a ticket for this in the wrong state, but here in Michigan you only have to be turning onto a one way road. It doesn’t matter if you’re on a one way road or not.

In Indiana you can make a left on red from a one-way street onto a one-way street but you can’t do it from a two-way street onto a one-way street.

U-turns are legal here, too.

I always worry I’m going to make an illegal turn in a state that does not allow U-turns or turns on red.
