> The last time I offered to slap a total stranger (okay, the only time,) was when an overly enthusiastic sweet young thing in black tried to spray me with perfume when I had the temerity to walk into Macy’s.

I just pull out a lighter when they point the perfume bottle at me, then smile and say, “I wouldn’t do that. I have \*real \*bad allergies and asthma…”

Most of them get it.

I first read that as homemade ice cream … 😕:smack:

Acetic acid is great at breaking down some sulfur based compounds, but I’ve never known it to work on chemical perfumes.

In our local mall there is a perfume store next door to a Yankee Candle store. I try to pass by on the other side of the mall, holding my nose and waving my hand. Ugh. I cannot imagine what it would be like to work there.

The point of making your own stuff from household ingredients isn’t that it _works_; it’s that you can oh-so-casually tell people “Brake fluid? Oh, I make my own”.

Why would people be more sensitive to it now, rather than the 90’s?

The point of making your own stuff is that it doesn’t have nasty stenchy stinky deadly undying chemical scents, but even nice, crisp vinegar won’t cut through them.

Of course, that assumes one finds the smell of vinegar tolerable. Not everyone does.

I had to check the date because I thought this thread was a couple of years old. I thought Scentsy was dead and gone. All of those perfume sprays make my asthma act up and give me a horrible headache. I shudder just to think that somewhere, somebody still has Scentsy.

A very sweet, dear friend of mine gave me some off-brand scented wax cubes in a dozen different odors and a large off-brand faux-pine scented candle for Xmas. I’m trying to figure out what to do with them. I’m allergic to the faux-pine and I don’t have any use for scented wax blocks. I’m not sure where she got the idea that I like that sort of stuff, I’ve never scented my home with anything like that and she has been to my place dozens of times. Gag.

Do you have cats, **TheFairie**? I always get rid of/discourage gifts that are scented by claiming “oh what a lovely scent but they’re so bad for my kitties, so sorry.” But since you are allergic to some of them you’d better claim allergies for all and put them sadly into the trash.

I dunno. Seems more people have asthma now, too. Could just be my reference pool of aging friends, family and coworkers.

At least one of the vendors at an antique mall where I have a booth has Scentsy products on display, and there’s a resale shop in my area that, in addition to selling assorted items on consignment, is also a Scentsy and Thirty-One vendor.

Thirty-One is a company that sells purses and tote bags.

> I would take a guess she’s using stuff from Lush. The crunchy people I know love their stuff and it’s fairly smelly, but “natural” is a rather fluid term. Their ingredients lists include “safe synthetics” whatever that means. But - I believe the actual scents are plant derived and so may give some sensitivities relief unless those sensitivities are to plant extracts.

I used to work upstairs from a Lush store. Maybe one bath bomb for your mother is cute at Christmas, but the store itself is absolutely rank. There’s nothing natural about such a concentration of ‘natural’ scents. It’s absolutely vile. I went inside the store but once to see what the stink was all about, and idly tried a sampler of skin cream on my hand. It was made of _garlic_. The stench didn’t come out for days. But even the garlic didn’t overpower the florid reek of concentrated oils and ‘safe synthetics’. And every Wednesday afternoon was delivery time, and the smell intensified to an unbearable degree. I pity anyone who works in one, the people who make it, the people who deliver it, and the people like me who work near one.

**TheFaerie** , there is a way to use these, but it might involve cruelty to animals. I’ll spoiler box it so those who are sensitive won’t be offended.

[spoiler] Warning! The following may be considered cruel in your community. Consider that before clicking. _Trigger Warning_

If you have a problem with animals outside knocking over your garbage cans, these “scent” things have a significant effective range, are long lasting, and are almost certainly going to put faces of disgust on skunks and possums similar to Jamie Kennedy describing [Gay Bullies](https://youtu.be/r-uWjSqGPI0?t=64).
