“Well you’re just a yankee, who cares what you think?” “You rock…I wouldn’t expect such good manners from a yankee” I swear to god the next girl who calls me a yankee down here is getting punched in the vagina. Yes I’m from Indiana and I’m spending time in Alabama. I get it. I’m not “from here”, but it’s practically racism how much I’m looked down on down here. And ya know what southern belles? Ya’ll are much more rude than any northerner I’ve ever experienced. I pit you girls because I’m just trying to make friends, I’m just trying to be friendly, and you’ve been nothing but mean to me the entire time I’ve been down here. ---

Yah, I got a lot of that in the brief period I lived in Nashville. The girls really can be vicious, and so can the women - my mom got as much of it. ---

Speaking only for myself, I have not enjoyed my forays into the southeastern US states. The culture I experienced was one of obvious superiority that rubs one the wrong way. (Yes, I have a minnesotan accent. No, I will not say boat incessantly for you to giggle at. Have you considered the fact that your southern accent sounds as unnatural and odd to me as mine does to yours?) ---

Hm. I’m a Connecticut Yankee through and through, but I’ve lived in TN for going on 10 years (much to my dismay but that’s another thread). I’ve never been laughed at or sneered at, apart from the occasional “where ya from?” questions. I have not adopted a southern accent either. Nor will I, god willin’ and the creek don’t rise. To be fair though, I’m female, very married, and 50 yrs old, not exactly your demographic… Edited to add that I can’t recall my husband ever being the butt of jokes or nastiness either. I love him but he IS a whiny bastard, so I would’ve heard about it 😛 Are you sure it’s the girls that are the problem? ---

I’m a southern boy living in the heart of the upper midwest. Y’all suck just as much as we do. Except for the beer…and the cheese…and the actual friendliness rather than false pretense and social darwinsim… and the way churches outnumber bars and religion is a quiet, personal thing filled with self-loathing rather than a tool for public shaming.
