I’m a southern girl (or at least I was twenty years ago), and I admit I’ve sneered at a couple of Yankee men. However, I was married to them at the time. ---

In many Southern states, it’s legal to shoot someone if you say “Oh, bless your heart” immediately afterwards. ---

The funny thing is, when we visited, everyone was super-nice. Nice as pie. But when we moved in, the heavy, heavy racism came out, as well as the regionalism. It’s like, spend your money here, and then move on. Of course it’s not every Southerner. But the women are by far the worst. You can have 20 women in a room. And if even five of them are mean as sin and the other fifteen are just normal, what do you expect to remember? ---

It’s possible the sentiment is sincere when you get out into the sticks, but in somewhere like Atlanta, which has a huge number of transplants, the “yankee/carpetbagger” bullshit doesn’t even make any sense. I had one serious girlfriend who was born and raised in the South, and she and her family would make those dumb jokes sometimes. Well guess what, I ended up marrying a Brazilian and to her, _you’re_ the obnoxious Northerner. So go eat your nasty grits and shut the fuck up. ---
