I’m going to second Drop-Box. It is free!
It is a seamless cloud backup service. I set my entire “my documents” folder on my PC to be included. Every time I save a document there it is automatically uploaded and stored. After that, you can access your files through any browser by going to their website.
There are a lot of other cool functions too. You can share folders on different computers, and share folders with other people.
Sorry to hear about your loss.
I think the intent is that you can easily pull the drive from your keychain to insert it in the computer. That way you don’t have your whole keyset dangling from the USB slot.
As I see this is near the top of the thread list again…
If anyone wants an update on everything head over to MPSIMS and check out my “f*** you that’s why” thread
I feel your pain, I once lost a laptop with a months worth of work on it. I know I know, I should have used google docs/dropbox, but I find the internet too distracting. I wish I backed everything up.
My school is the 2nd best nationally, but is located near one of the nation’s least safe areas. I shouldn’t have left it unattended for the five minutes that I did.
Loosing a flashdrive must be even more painful, as though we can get inside the head of highend laptop theives, it is impossible to comprehend someone who would fuck up someone’s entire semester for a near-worthless and unsellable drive.
That’s super shitty, but now you know to backup/use other services as well. People can be pretty sucky sometimes, but so can technology (what if the flash drive had failed?)
I literally write everything using Google Docs and it’s served me well. No lost or corrupted files, super easy to access anywhere, and I can share it instantly and work in it with others at the same time.
Just a thought–did you write your documents in Word? I know this is a long shot, but Word sometimes creates temp files when it does backups (or at least it used to). If you poke around in your TMP directory, you might find some bits and pieces of your documents. Probably not, but it’s worth a look.
ETA: Heh. Never mind. See you got it handled. Good to hear!
