Last fall, just before Thanksgiving, I shot my first turkey. It was the most thrilling experience of my life. Sure, it scared a lot of people in the frozen foods section and I’m not allowed in that particular Kroger anymore, but it is a memory I’ll always cherish. ---

Realistically, Babar the Elephant and Tony the Tiger won’t exist without tourism of some sort. Such pests play havoc with crops, not to mention children. My friend’s boyfriend’s parents (yeah, I know) were big game hunters. They had gone on many expeditions and had a couple rooms of their house devoted to their trophies. Rooms were decorated to look like African landscapes, complete with murals, stone outcroppings, and vegetation. In one of the connected bathrooms stood a stuffed baboon, its arms outstretched with fists made save for the index fingers pointing at each other. This was because the baboon held the fresh toilet paper while you sat and did your business. Just thought I’d share. ---

Tsk. Another interesting aside; the Dutch population is overwehelmingly against hunting. About 95% percent is against it, polls show again and again. So do you think our crown prince, the one who is to be king in five years or so, gets the PR message and stops hunting? Does he open the Royal Hunting Grounds for the public to hike in? No. He invites a couple of captains of industry and off they go shooting deer. This is a Prince who isn’t terrible popular as it is (his wife is the real star) and he could really use some boost. But no. His grandfather, [a famous lout and scoundrel,](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Bernhard_of_Lippe-Biesterfeld)(and patron of the World Wildlife Fund, was a hunter. I grew up hunting and shooting. What these people are doing is not hunting; it’s trophy shooting at best, and simple blood sport at worst, neither of which I have any respect for. The prime lesson I learned about hunting was: don’t play with your food. This includes shooting animals simply for the trophy or the rush, catch-and-release of fish, etc. If you’re not going to eat it, leave it alone. I lived in Africa for three years and went on numerous photo safaris during that time. Game parks take in huge revenue from this activity and nothing has to die in the process so that some asshole can have a head on his wall. ---

As a vegetarian of a few years (disregarding a few occasions where I’m cajoled into eating meat while staying at a friend’s home, but I never purchase it), there doesn’t seem to be any consistency on any sort of scale in regards to animals whatsoever. Tucker Carlson says Michael Vick should be executed for running a dog hunting ring, but Vick’s a big scary black guy. Rich white men go to Africa to go create jobs for the po’ starving folk and they’re a part of the conservation movement and if we didn’t grow up on it, we wouldn’t get it. Honestly, apart from in instances where the extinction of a species is possible, I think any sick and twisted thing a human wants to do with an animal should be permissible (including using them for sexual pleasure). I don’t think anything can come close to overfeeding it, slowly slaughtering it and then trussing its corpse up to eat and that’s something most humans pay to take part in daily. ---
