Today, President Trump called on police officers to abuse suspects. And a crowd of police officers cheered. Video [here](https://twitter.com/MattGertz/status/891005850420224001/video/1). From Trump, I expect this. But I expect more of the police. Every single one who applauded should be fired. ---

I endorse this pitting. Some small but significant portion of police officers are bullies who enjoy hurting people. Those cops are greatly hurting America and Americans. ---

So, among the American institutions to which Trump (and some large fraction of police officers, apparently) is either indifferent or actively hostile are: presumed innocence; protection of rights while presumed innocent; rule of law. I am pretty sure he just threw this out there as red meat for his audience. In a sense, that makes it worse because it make it clear he has no understanding, or interest in increasing his understanding, of the principles which are supposed to govern our country. Every day that goes by makes me wonder how, and how well, we will ever be able to recover from the influence being exercised by 45 and his minions on our national character. ---

My first thought was that Trump probably said something ill-advised but it wasn’t as blatant as the OP was suggesting.
