I have very good reasons to hope the bomber is not connected to some Islamic movement, that being that perfectly decent Muslims have suffered enormously in this country from the hatred and harassment of bigots and hate-mongers.

There is a small but vicious subset of Americans who crave a general war against Islam. That they tend to call themselves Christians and that they tend towards the rightish spectrum is of no importance, the importance is that they are functionally evil. Anything that offers aid and comfort to evil is bad news for everyone.

This is why we can’t have nice things!

I, for one, hope that the bomber or bombers turn out not to be like me or anyone I like, because then, by the transitive property, I and the people I like would be bad people. Yeah, that makes sense.

Patton Oswalt has really hit the nail on the head, if I may paraphrase: only the tiniest number of people and even a small fraction only of that would ever engage in such activity. Most of the billion plus Muslims, Christians, Hindus etc., etc. in the world are horrified at such actions. The evil people are outnumber hundreds of millions of good people for every bad person. There is a lot of good people in the world. A lot.

I don’t see anything wrong with hoping that the culprit isn’t from a group of people that you associate with and is from a group of people that you detest. The deed was done, the victims are dead, nothing is going to change that. But if the perp was Muslim, then we’re in for more Islamaphobia. If black, then that gives fuel to the fires of racism. So personally, I’m pulling for a right wing white male if only because anything else is going to light the tinderbox.

I disagree with that, but I can see how your motives are coming from a good place with this thinking.

As a conservative white male who enjoys primitive firearms I can easily picture this lighting the tinderbox of banning black powder for instance.

I fear no matter who did it there will probably be negative consequences in some way due to government overreaction.

However, I stand by my initial response that most people reacting with an automatic thought of the Tea Party aren’t doing it for such noble reasons. They just assume it’s them because they hate them. It’s as simple as that.
