> It seems that a lot of the dope is left leaning, which is cool, however I think that this message here is saying, “If you hate Hillary, your a right wing idiot”. I think that’s fucked up IMO.

That’s the way it is with liberals. There’s simply no legitimate basis for disagreement with the liberal point of view. (Take **septimus’** little screed just above as an example. To hear him tell it there’s simply no reason to hate Hillary Clinton save for Limbaugh/Colter lies. This, despite the fact that [in post 108](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=19521190&postcount=108) in this very thread I listed many reasons people might despise her that have nothing to do with either media personality.) Either you hew to the liberal line or you’re a moron. Or you’re evil. Or, if you’re really able to score points, you’re a moron and evil to boot.

This is because liberals simply cannot tolerate dissent. You may have noticed that in communist regimes (i.e., liberalism given free rein) the most serious crimes aren’t theft, rape or murder, but criticism of, or activism against, the state.

But, since here in the U.S. they can’t come knocking on your door at midnight to disappear you or toss you into a re-education camp, liberals are forced to try to intimidate you into compliance through anger, insult, and whenever possible, peer pressure.

I saw a cartoon earlier today in which two men stood facing each other from about six feet apart. On the ground between them lay a number, which appeared to the man on the left to be a 6 and to the man on the right to be a 9. Each man was convinced his interpretation was the correct one, but in reality both were right in one sense and wrong in another. The ‘correct’ answer was subjective and dependent utterly upon the observer’s point of view.

So it goes with politics. The truth is that there are positives and negatives to both the conservative and liberal approach to political and social issues, but there seems to be something in the liberal mind that convinces it that no other belief can possibly have merit. And not only that but anyone who doesn’t see the light in the same way (and often, to the same extent) they do, has to be intellectually or morally deficient.

This is why they feel entitled to take over college administration buildings, block traffic, seek to prevent opposition speakers on campuses, physically attack supporters of opposition political candidates, etc. To their minds, their cause is so righteous and their views so obviously superior that any behavior is permissible and justified to defend or promote them.

Frankly you should consider yourself lucky that calling you a right-wing idiot is all they’re able to do here.

:cough: I don’t have her education nor her temperament, but yeah, my IQ, strictly speaking, is probably in the same ballpark as hers. And speaking as someone with a “genius” IQ, I am still capable of making bad choices–as is she. Arrogance is a pitfall.

> [@](#):
>
> Do you know how much money a smart lawyer can make in private practice? _ **And yet both Clintons chose public service.** _

OK. Does that make influence peddling acceptable?

I would say that money is a kind of power, and being in a position of political authority is as well. Are they servants of the public? Or are they using elections as a path to power? A mere Alan Dershowitz would have to spend some of his millions from client fees as a way of buying temporary flickers of power, and when you look at it that way, well, maybe the Clintons really did get the bigger payoff.

My problem with Hillary isn’t just one thing. That’s the point. I can put up with any one or two flaws.

Lots of politicians voted for the war–or rather the AUMF–including Biden and Kerry, both of whom I like all right albeit with reservations.
Lots of politicians have strong Wall Street ties, including Obama, for whom I voted in 2008 & in 2012.
Lots of politicians are creepy dynasts, including, arguably Jerry Brown and Al Gore–both of whom I like better than the Clintons.
Lots of politicians are “pragmatic moderates.”
I suppose there are lots of politicians who like to talk about how smart they are, then call you part of a vast conspiracy of evil if you point out that they do things that are pretty dumb or pretty crooked. I think that’s _not_ smart.
Lots of politicians are free-traders, and think that protectionism is unworthy of consideration. Some even accuse worker’s rights advocates of being racist bigots.
Lots of politicians are unwilling to use the kind of rhetoric on climate change that we desperately need now and for the last twenty years.

I don’t expect politicians to be perfect. I’d like them not to be _all these stupid things at once._ I’d like a politician who has some outstanding positive to make up for his flaws. What’s Hillary Clinton’s outstanding positive? Anyone?

Oh, and very few politicians have as bad a reputation as Hillary Clinton.
Very few politicians can guarantee a continued revolt against the President by state legislators akin to what Obama went through.
And almost no politicians can guarantee that we spend almost the entire tenure of a US President in a state of constant Congressional hearings and investigations.

But she can!

Don’t bother telling me Trump is worse. Of course Trump is worse. But Democrats nominated her to lose, not knowing Trump would win. (Unless they had inside information that the GOP nomination was, improbably, rigged for Trump. As if.) If they actually thought she was a winner, this was a crazy nomination–and the fact that the GOP is managing to blow their chance to\* walk over \*one of the most hated political careerists in America doesn’t make it not crazy.

You want to vote for Hillary? Go ahead. I can’t stop you, and it’s not like there are any \*good \*candidates, whatever that even means.

For me, if I voted for Hillary, just to vote for the Democratic Party, what would I say to my GOP friends and relatives if they vote for Trump? Other than, “We’re all suckers,” because that’s the upshot.

If I were to vote for Hillary, I expect Democrats would tell me that I have to vote for her again in four years because I did before. And the idea of that makes me spitting mad.

And here’s the sad thing. She’s probably going to win this November, and then basically be a giant gift to GOP fundraising for…the rest of my life. For the rest of my life. The hated Clinton dynasty, like a whole family of Teddy Kennedies.

I pit Hillary, I pit the Democratic officeholders who rushed onto her bandwagon, I pit Elizabeth Warren for being a coward, and I\* pity \*the Democratic voters who think this will end remotely well.

A manufactured reputation. And, any Democratic President is going to be greeted with implacable hatred and resistance; that’s what the modern Republican Party is about. Hatred, and the desire to cripple the government. They can’t even cooperate with each other anymore very well, much less with a non-Republican.

There are two kinds of stupid Hillary haters.
Those who plan to hold their nose and vote for her, and
Those who want Trump to win.

Until you explicitly deny that you’re in the 2nd group, I’ll assume you are.
In that case you’re too stupid for us to bother trying to educate you.

I admit to having had an aversion to Hillary Clinton for years, although hatred is too strong a term. As a conservative I guess that’s unsurprising but strangely I’ve found myself warming to her over the last year. Maybe it’s the sheer insanity of Trump, who has destroyed any Republican hopes for the Presidency this cycle, in contrast to the relative normality of Clinton. Anyway I find myself wishing her good luck (and praying she won’t be too extreme in her liberalism.)

I’m also looking forward post-election to The First Blast of the Trump Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women.

On this message board all I see is broad strokes, when someone does make an in depth statement about what they think, they are torn apart by the “goodly” folks. I can understand wanting Hillary over Trump. To say Hillary is a good candidate for president is damn foolish. With all the people in America, we got Hillary and Trump!?

So spare me your democrat versus republican debate. No one is happy here. This sucks for everyone.

I, and a lot of people I personally know think HRC is a fantastic candidate, irrespective of who her candidate it.

We are excited to vote for her and think she’ll be a fantastic president. I’m not sure where you get the idea that we all are begrudgingly supporting her and that it’s bad for the Democratic Party.

That’s just not so.

What are your “in depth” problems with Ms Clinton? Not just phrases copied from Trump, please.

She’s not the candidate of my dreams but, in the reality of this election, I’m quite sure she’ll do. Sanders had some good ideas but would _not_ make a good candidate. Of course Trump is ridiculous–but I’d prefer Clinton to _any_ of the mediocrities or nutcases who shared the stage with him.

This may suck _for you_ but definitely does not suck for everyone. And, yes. There _are_ differences between the parties.

Of course one can make that argument that there are better choices, but they did not run, unfortunately. What you descrive though is that you are letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. And attitude that it is not only defeating in politics but also in most other human efforts.

“Give them the third best to go on with; the second best comes too late, **the best never comes**.”

- Robert Watson-Watt, who developed early warning radar in Britain to counter the rapid growth of the Luftwaffe, propounded a “cult of the imperfect”, which he described in his quote.

I don’t think that I know better than anyone else and I am glad you are so passionate so as to share your view. I am still undecided personally. I just have many worries about both candidates. I don’t mean to be an asshole to anyone and I am sorry if I come off as an asshole.

That’s cool. Thanks. It does get tiring refuting the lie that HRC supporters are just voting for her as an “anti-Trump” vote or otherwise begrudgingly.

I’m positive it’s true for some percentage, but there are tons of us that truly like and respect this person. I’m a far left progressive liberal and I truly like her.

I actually do not like Hillary. I think she has severe failings and is more a “meeting/management” type than a true leader. She has certainly proven to be a poor campaigner over the years.

That being said, I’ve voting for her because of her positions and her party’s positions. Because the Republicans have gone completely “we believe in a different version of reality” batshit insane and there’s nothing on that side I can support anymore. Because I’ve become more liberal as I’ve gotten older and less anger filled.
