I consider _elitism_ to be a personal flaw, not the OP’s musical preferences. And he’s already stated that he’s fine with being called that, so again, I really don’t care. Personally, I’d take Beethoven (or pretty much _anything_) over Britney Spears. I’m a composer by profession, of _course_ my personal tastes are going to gravitate toward the more melody-driven sounds of “older” music, as opposed to the electronic beat-driven sounds of today. But that doesn’t mean I hold anything against someone who _does_ like that stuff. And I’m sure not going to say “If you absolutely have to make noise, why not at least play something that actually has a smidgeon of artistic value?” because the bottom line is the OP was complaining about the _volume_ of the music. If the choice of musical selection comes into play then, in my opinion, the OP is simply looking for things to bitch about, and it seems you are too. ---

**Excalibre** , you’ve managed to restart the argument about whether an educated and particular taste in the arts is/isn’t a form of elitism and if so whether it’s intolerable/objectionable/acceptable/a moral imperative, which is an argument (if I’m not confusing you with someone else) you know well and have become very persuasive at defending your side of. But I think it’s inappropriate here. You began by saying “Yes, yes, I’ve heard it before…” Maybe so, but you \*hadn’t \* heard **DooWahDiddy** say it in _this_ thread: as I read the post, s/he was just saying that too-loud music can be obnoxious no matter _what_ you’re playing, and that the right to a peaceful commons should not be predicated on what the concerned persons’ tastes are. To have a refined taste in music may or may not be snobbish, and occasional snobbishness may or may not be defensible – but that’s not the issue. The issue is, even if a particular taste in music can be properly labelled “better” than another, it should have nothing whatever to do with the right to play either in public spaces. The idea that it should, not the mere valuation of one artist over another, is what is indefensibly snobbish here. I don’t think the OP was seriously suggesting that, but I can sympathize with **DooWahDiddy** ’s position that the two criteria shouldn’t be conflated. This is the only reading that makes any sense to me (even though **DooWahDiddy** ’s recent posts have been less temperate), because as a professional composer, his/her _job_ is to make just those bad/fair/better/best judgments about music, not to deny the validity of doing so, which is the contrary position that best serves as a foil for your arguments. ---

I’m not the one who popped into the thread with arrogant descriptions of childishness and “personal flaws”. If you mean the time I encouraged **DooWahDiddy** to outline his point rather than just snark at people, I’m not sure I feel any terrible sense of guilt over that. And most of the rest of the time I’ve just been trying to disengage. Go reread **DooWahDiddy** ’s first post. There is no possible reading of **Peak Banana** ’s post that had anything to do with people not having the right to play certain kinds of music. There was about four lines of some throwaway comment about how people playing loud music are inevitably playing bad music. Which led **DooWahDiddy** to come into the thread and drip contempt all over everyone who didn’t share his enlightenment. In fact, his attitude is a bit like the sort of smug moviestar liberal that gives the rest of us a bad name - sure, Barbra Streisand’s got the right politics, but does that give her some special privilege to hold court over the less enlightened? Different conceptions of the world here, **Soupy** (I do that because it’s rather awkward to refer to someone by a name that includes “the”. It’s just sorta weird. :)) The trouble is with those who wish to browbeat everyone else into being enlightened like our **DooWahDiddy** does here. But all you really have to do is reread **DooWahDiddy** ’s posts, from the first one in the thread. See if that snippy tone of self-righteousness was really warranted.
