Exhibit A: :rolleyes: What a retarded piece of shit! Can all of you see that travesty of an emoticon? If I suffered from autism, I might use that smiley in good faith for its intended purpose. Since that isn’t the case, this new smiley is effectively worthless. Sure, I suppose it might be appropriate in narrow cases such as a father interacting with his 14-year-old daughter, but that really isn’t the kind of thing we have going on at the SDMB. Ever. If ever I wanted to express that I was thinking about heading out for an ice cream cone, I suppose this new smiley would do just fine. But that isn’t the kind of thing I come to the public forum to express. Ever. Meanwhile, the old version exhibited abundant utility. In a world where billionaire-backed Tea party maniacs threaten to seize the reins of decision-making for war and peace _for the entire world_, what could express the zeitgeist of the age more concisely than the old rolleyes smiley? And what could be farther from that than the new one? I’m going to hand the new rolleyes smiley an F-minus. You have to try pretty hard to suck this bad in today’s world, but congratulations, new rolleyes smiley, you’ve done it. Maybe you can be featured in some bathos-soaked beer commercial someday: “You got so wasted, you used the new rolleyes smiley! :rolleyes: Congratulations, new-rolleyes-smiley user, you deserve another beer. When you’re this emotionally unaware, you might as well keep going!” Gawd, I swear. :rolleyes: Dammit, see what I mean?!?!?! ---

The larger problem is that the new rolleyes smiley is applied retroactively to posts that had the normal rolleyes smiley. ---

I agree with **Max the Immortal**. I’ve seen people use a one emoticon response to a whole post, and it’s supposed to convey something. More often, it’s just a waste of a post. The person hasn’t made a point, so there’s nothing to respond to. But it appears that the person was trying to say something. Without the smilie at their disposal, the person might have to actually use some words to express something. Especially in the case of the rolleyes smilie that can be interpreted in a variety of ways, I think that’s a good thing. ---
