> I went to school out of state once; never once thought I was entitled to vote there. I voted via an absentee ballot in the town I grew up in.

Why? If I move to a town for three months, I’m entitled to vote there. It’s where I live. The idea that I’d not be, that I must be tied to the earth like a farmer, is insulting and ignorant of the transient nature of many modern Americans.

> If a college dorm can be used to be considered a “resident” for voting purposes, then why isn’t it also considered the same for in-state tuition purposes?

This is idiotic. When I drive through South Carolina, I pay South Carolina gas taxes, but that doesn’t mean I’m entitled to in-state tuition. As Brainglutton said, the two ideas have nothing to do with one another.

The logic behind in-state tuition and out of state tuition is that _parents_ are the ones paying the tuition and the State taxes.

As to whether such logic is still sound nowadays is a different matter. Personally, I feel if a student can show that he is paying for his own tuition and holding down a job in-state (gotta pay the taxes that support the University system) then he should qualify for in-state tuition.

Old Male Senator: Yeah, that Sharia law stuff is foreign, old, and really cruel to women. We don’t want stuff like that in our country. Before we vote I’m just gonna add on to this bill some stuff about restricting what our women can do with their bodies and their reproductive parts . . .

I know this is a _different_ reason to pit the NC legislature, but since the thread was here…

Those underhanded pig fuckers snuck a vote in that would require abortion clinics to be held to the same safety standards as a surgical facility, and would essentially force every clinic in the state (except one in Asheville) to close. Story[here](http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/north-carolinas-abortion-law-sham/2013/07/07/21a19b1c-e5a2-11e2-aef3-339619eab080_story.html).

> [@](#):

> ON WEDNESDAY, just before the Fourth of July holiday, North Carolina Republicans added a slew of anti-abortion restrictions at the last minute to a bill otherwise concerned with banning Sharia law (already a questionable endeavor, but never mind that now).

They aren’t concerned at all about safety or health, they are trying to legislate their religious convictions. I hope the House takes a good long look at this before voting on it.

I have the feeling the abortion bill fiasco may be the straw. Governor Pat is reportedly “concerned” about it.

In other news, my parents were considering taking Spike down to the Moral Monday demonstration last night, but decided not to bring the boy out in the rain. (He’s made of spun sugar.) My sister, who was there, says it was a huge crowd.

> The highly-conservative North Carolina legislature just released a new voter suppression bill that would enact not just voter ID, but a host of other new initiatives designed to make it more difficult to vote. A significant roadblock to the legislation was removed last month when the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, making it easier for states with a history of racial discrimination like North Carolina to enact new voter suppression laws.

> •Implementing a strict voter ID requirement that bars citizens who don’t have a proper photo ID from casting a ballot.
> •Eliminating same-day voter registration, which allowed residents to register at the polls.
> •Cutting early voting by a full week.
> •Increasing the influence of money in elections by raising the maximum campaign contribution to $5,000 and increasing the limit every two years.
> •Making it easier for voter suppression groups like True The Vote to challenge any voter who they think may be ineligible by requiring that challengers simply be registered in the same county, rather than precinct, of those they challenge.
> •Vastly increasing the number of “poll observers” and increasing what they’re permitted to do. In 2012, ThinkProgress caught the Romney campaign training such poll observers using highly misleading information.
> •Only permitting citizens to vote in their specific precinct, rather than casting a ballot in any nearby ward or election district. This can lead to widespread confusion, particularly in urban areas where many precincts can often be housed in the same building.
> •Barring young adults from pre-registering as 16- and 17-year-olds, which is permitted by current law, and repealing a state directive that high schools conduct voter registration drives in order to boost turnout among young voters.
> •Prohibiting some types of paid voter registration drives, which tend to register poor and minority citizens.
> •Dismantling three state public financing programs, including the landmark program that funded judicial elections.
> •Weakening disclosure requirements for outside spending groups.
> •Preventing counties from extending polling hours in the event of long lines or other extraordinary circumstances and making it more difficult for them to accommodate elderly or disabled voters with satellite polling sites at nursing homes, for instance.

Shit, I’ll go! I’ll eat his fried chicken and his watermelon, and I’ll still call him an asshole. And if he wants to pander to the hippie vote, and offer me a hash brownie, I’ll eat one if he will, and if I get to watch what happens.

Saw a stoned Republican once, and laugh! I thought I’d surely die!

Eh, McCrory strikes me as the type of ass who would put either raisins or carob chips in a batch of cookies.

Oh, [this PDF](http://gallery.mailchimp.com/58ec19aaea4630b1baad0e5e4/files/femcare.pdf) showed up on Facebook this afternoon…it’s a suspension of operation notice from NC’s DHHS for the only abortion-providing clinic that was expected to survive the new regulations. Hell, what McCrory has done is worse than what Perry did…at least Perry let his sister’s clinic stay in business.

So the [closing](http://www.bizjournals.com/triad/news/2013/07/30/citing-financial-difficulties.html?page=all) of the Greensboro indigent medical clinic was announced this week. A direct result of the NC General Assembly’s refusal to expand Medicaid. It’s gonna be a long fucking winter in the ER.
