I’m guessing that’ll be the last party invite the OP gets…and rightly so. Bouncing a cheque is bad enough when it’s accidental (if it can ever be truly accidental), but going to a party and buying a load of stuff you know you can’t cover the cost of, well that’s plain thievery.
If the OP ever comes back, I’m wondering if maybe possibly there’s the mitigating circumstance of her end-of-January paycheck not having cleared in time to cover the check she wrote.
At any rate, though, asking someone to wait 20 days for a bounced check to be made good? No way. Whatever fees the bank charged may have gone up by that time, for one thing. Does the OP normally pay for stuff with beads and marbles? And I wonder whose head she was going to bite off.
That’s exactly what I thought, but alas.
I’ll admit to having bounced a bunch of checks years ago. (Haven’t in a long, long time, because I LEARNED.) The thing is, when I’ve bounced a check? I’ve never been so self-centered and deluded that I got pissed off at OTHER PEOPLE for MY checks bouncing.
YOU ride without a helmet, it’s not the PAVEMENT’S fault your skull is cracked, for fuck’s sake.
Hey - and they’re even all free. So you don’t have to worry about them cruelly bouncing your checks at you.
Well, I’ve bounced a check, but that was because my brother bounced his rent check to me. Of course, that was because his paycheck bounced. But that was because his boss at the time had absolutely no clue how to run a business. So I guess it all goes back to the whole “financially responsible people” thing.
RE the OP: Getting upset at someone who doesn’t like getting rubber checks is pretty lame.
For today, instead of calling someone a self centered arrogant idiot, I’ll use the name of the OP. (Anyone watch Scrubs?)

That’s what I was wondering. If it was a timing issue, well then, the OP still has the $200 and should immediately pay up, and make a deal for when she’ll pay the pampered chef lady her bank fee. If the OP deliberately wrote a check she had no way to cover, the OP is an asshole.
Shit does happen sometimes, things get missed, screw-ups occur. For that reason I won’t wish that the OP gets arrested for fraud… Jesus! Talk about over reaction
But getting pissed at the people wanting their money? That’s fucked up and inexcusable.
What fucking ever, I needed to vent so I did. I don’t need anyone’s BS.
Then get a Live Journal account.
Boo fucking hoo.
Do people not listen and see that those of us who work in a school don’t get paid every 2 weeks like others? We get paid once a fucking month!
Do people not think that maybe then they shouldn’t purchase two hundred bucks worth of crap they don’t need?
As for “who hasn’t bounced a check”, perhaps the question should be, “who hasn’t bounced a check on purpose?”
Banks charge you when someone else’s check bounces? How is that fair?

It wasn’t a screw up-she admitted she wasn’t going to be able to cover the check until the end of the month, she bought a bunch of stuff when she didn’t have the cash, AND purposely writing a check when you KNOW you don’t have the funds to cover it is illegal.
OK, since we have everyone’s attention here and the OP has been sufficiently ostricized.
Why don’t banks release whatever funds are available in situations like this?
e.g.; if the OP had $187 in her account, then why not pay the check casher $187 NOW and then have the OP owe the balance of $13 plus the bouncing fees?
This would be much better in lots of circumstances where the check writer and the check casher are both in tight monetary situations.

She may not have known that she couldn’t cover the cheque before it went boingy boingy. She hasn’t said that she knew going in that it would bounce, only that after the fact she can’t fix the problem till she gets her next paycheque.
I am not excusing her actions, I just think the Straight Dope Vengeance Squad was jumping into action a little too quick.

Why do you think stores charge a customer a fee if the check the customer writes bounces? It’s to cover the fee the store’s bank has charged them.
Yeah, that’s not going to happen. If you want to rant without feedback, get a blog.
Too damn funny. Just wanted to thank you for a good morning chuckle!
I bounced a couple of checks back in my college days. I readily admit that much of my behavior at the time was irresponsible, self-centered, and immature.
(Anyone else out there glad you waited more than 190 posts before starting your first Pit thread?)
“What fucking ever.” Can’t wait to see this princess in GD!

I cannot imagine why you would think this significant. If you do not know the balance in your checking account - at least in round figures - you don’t write a check. I guess it might categorize her behavior as gross negligence instead of intentional fraud, but I’m not sure that distinction is terribly important to the poor schmuck who accepted her worthless paper.

I figured that she wrote the cheque in good faith, all right; what got me was the 'tude over the victim demanding to know where her two hundred bucks was coming from.
Are there pictures of you at all the registers in every supermarket in your county?
If badkittypriestess wrote a check she knew she couldn’t cover, that’s not only being an asshole, it’s a crime.
Paper hanging is bad.

I get you, but its perhaps because a cheque is non-negotiable, its supposed to be an agreement between two banks to transfer money between two customers. Someone will put us both right no doubt.
I just think the Straight Dope Vengeance Squad was jumping into action a little too quick.
I can just imagine them, coldly scanning The Pit through narrowed eyes, waiting to simultaneously pounce on those making an ass of themselves. Waiting. Just waiting…
