What irritates me about this statement is that there’s no room for error – you’re utterly correct, apparently.

Now, this would be an easier position to maintain if the position against which you inveigh were a fringe position. But when a substantial portion of the country appears to support the people you revile, it becomes a bit harder to convincingly assert that you’re completely right and your opponents completely wrong.

No. The Republicans are not trying to crash the country. They have a very different view than you do about the proper role of government. That’s not an objectively wrong or right position – there is no tablet from Mt Sinai that lays out the structure for how much a government’s role should be to help people and how much it should be to merely create a safe arena where people are free to help themselves.

Well, maybe not in detail suited to contract law, but I don’t think Torah is real friendly to dishonest scales (“dynamic scoring” anyone?)–I know Proverbs condemns them–and there are primitive welfare-state regulations in Torah itself. Can we get a rabbi in here?

In any case, we’ve gone past arguments about the extent of the welfare state to the Gingrich/Armey/T.E.A. Party plan to actually bankrupt the country so the other side loses.

The GOP really are trying to crash the economy now.

Oh? I didn’t see that, thanks for correcting me (where does it state it on the page?). Then again, it probably should’ve been obvious; those amounts did seem ridiculously low. Still, even a few hundred thousand isn’t bank-breaking for Cali in such a situation.

Check the footnote in the box in the upper right of your first link. I’ve been dealing with government financial statements long enough so that the first thing I look for is the note saying how many zeros they’ve dropped from the displayed figures.

Please try to keep up with the class. The topic under discussion is a tax increase on the first $100k-ish of income. The issue, thus, is the use of political power to insure that other people pay for government services.
