I pit the Virginia Primary (statewide party races)

And none of this trying to legislate how much underwear a guy can show above his waistband, either.

If Maxim is seen as destroying society there’s nothing anyone can do to “not” be part of it. Likewise, civil rights issues like allowing gay people to live normal, even public, lives radically change our society for the better in the long term.

And on the other hand, while there’s lots of flashy talk about taxes, spending is really all that matters, and I don’t seriously see much real difference in either party, Virginia or elsewhere, in that respect. No matter who gets elected in 2005, I doubt very much that the long term tax burden on Virginians will change very much at all. Republicans tend to cause havoc and uncertainty with their wacky tax schemes that sell really well as campaign slogans (like Gilmore’s “no car tax” carnival: "hey, let’s pretend to lower a local tax by reimbursing localities out of the state budget! OMG…what the, a massive state deficit and the bond rating under threat? How could that have happened!!?), but when it comes to making the cuts that actually affect the long term cost of government… not so much. If you don’t cut spending, cutting overall taxes is almost exactly like reducing your monthly payment to pay off your credit card bill: less to pay now just means more to pay later.

So I think there’s a case to be made that the GOP is groking things just fine: they just have a different idea of what’s important and what’s at stake.

Yeah, there’s a couple down here still, one just a few blocks off of the Oceanfront.

North Hills HS grad here, early '80s. And I know of a dozen or so from my class alone that are living or working in The Old Dominion.

That would be Bubba’s Beach Club. I used to live in there as a young sailor - the nice folks who worked there would have my beer uncapped before I got to the bar.
