I’m not bothered by generic dead baby jokes. I was bothered by the ones that seem specific to this situation–jokes about this particular dead baby. Somehow there’s a significant difference in my mind. And I have to concur that “it’s how we cope” is bullshit. I totally agree that that can be true in the aftermath of something that really is shocking to the system–specific humor is a coping mechanism. But some of the comments here seemed to be more about showing off one’s wit and sardonic detachment than anything else. It’s using a specific, terrible tragedy as a springboard for a parlor trick, and I think that’s in poor taste in a way that just telling dead baby jokes at a party is not. ---

What I wanna know is – WTF is the point of putting a helmet on a baby if it doesn’t protect it from a fall? That mother deserves compensation for her loss because of a defective helmet. So does the pedophile who was waiting on the ground. The only one who came out ahead was the necrophilic pedophile at the coroner’s office. Lucky bastard! ---

BUT Once the helmet is put on, it has a job to do, and this one failed. IMO, the 4th floor is a pretty low release point for a baby. I will grant that maybe she tossed it in upward arc so the effective release point was higher, but still… ---

It would depend on what the helmet was designed for. For example, a motorcycle helmet, which is designed for a single high velocity impact, would be more appropriate than a hockey helmet, which is designed for multiple low velocity impacts. Government funded parenting classes should teach parents to identify and use the appropriate helmet when throwing their babies. ---

If the baby was wearing a motorcycle helmet the mom would have strapped it to a bike and ran it into a bridge abutment. If the baby was wearing a hockey helmet she would have clubbed it with a stick.
