eminem’s girlfriend?
Yeah, I know. But the “This.” thing is fairly new, and it’s starting to show up here a lot lately. Something about it just irks me, and it just doesn’t seem to fit here. I say this as an SDMB fan, my “guest” status notwithstanding. I figured since it made my hackles rise every time it showed up, it was pitworthy to me.
You must be joking. Didn’t you see the thread in ATMB where people were complaining that to see a guest’s profile, they actually had to click a link?
Would it help if I wrote up an “I agree! In fact…” post? A while back I went through a brief phase (inspired by a now-banned poster who kept describing how angry certain things made him, to the point of ridiculouslness) where I’d describe in lengthy detail how something on this board was infuriating me to the point of performing a suicidal act of self-mutilation.
What they said.
I heartily endorse this event or OP.
+1 in MPSIMS.

That.
I had the urge to post a “+1” in a thread once.
I sent it in a private message to the poster in question instead.
Gotta disagree. Sometimes another person has made a beautiful, brilliant post, and there’s absolutely nothing you can add to it. At the same time, you want to show you agree (or think the argument bears repeating). So you quote the post, and write “This” or “QFT” underneath it.
By your OP, you revealed that by posting ‘this’, ‘+1’, etc people would be “pushing your buttons” as the saying goes. So your buttons are showing.
Postin’ “me too,” like some brain-dead AOLer.
VC03, right? It took me a minute to remember it was him and not someone who’s still with us and fairly prolific.
Tru’ dat
I know, right?
No doubt.
But seriously, I can understand why folks do that. I mean, it is not really my style to do it, but I think I understand what’s up; they are showing support for the poster sometimes, right?
Sometimes, it can get awfully heated in some of these threads, and a poster can find themselves all alone on an issue with many posters coming at them. Sometimes, a simple ‘I agree’ can make the poster not feel so…alone.
Sometimes, I feel odd posting a simple ‘haaa!’ when a poster cracks me up. I mean, I’m not really adding anything to the thread by doing that, but I can’t help wonder if maybe sometimes a poster appreciates someone acknowledging that they are funny.
I also feel/think/understand this way.
Is that a +1 jackboot of moderating?
I’ve done the HaHaHa bit myself, and I’ve quoted a post only to point out it was beautiful or insightful or hysterical, and added a few words to explain that - maybe even a just smiley, if it conveyed the right reaction. I don’t mind that - I get it - and it can add some value to a thread. But “This.” is truncated and nonspecific and clumsy and lazy. I had to see it a few times before I even figured out what it meant, and then I started to get annoyed by it specifically, not just any single word response. There’s no eloquence or elegance in it, no imagination, not a single goddam good thing about it. Even the one word responses you wild and crazy guys came up with to post as a contribution to this thread showed some imagination and effort, and I appreciated that you thought about it enough to come up with something to add. In doing so, you illustrated my point. That’s all I’m pointlessly bitching about, really. Just that one stupid word used as a reply or a comment.
