When I was about eight, I had an infected tooth taken out (a baby tooth). The dentist hardly gave me any novocaine, and then afterwards complained to my mother that I cried too much, and that I was a total brat. :rolleyes: And you’re a pediatric dentist, bitch! (The next time, when she found a tooth that had this super long root – again, a baby tooth – she DID give me enough. That time, it took forever to get the feeling back into my tongue. But at least it didn’t hurt so freaking much). ---

That refusal gets overridden very reluctantly, and only with court orders. I doubt US death row inmates are having routine forced medication. For instance, some dialysis patients refuse dialysis. This is a right of every dialysis patient, to stop dialyzing when they no longer want to have their kidney failure treated. But some of my patients try to manipulate the system, saying they are refusing dialysis on a certain shift, or under the care of a certain dialysis nurse, or if they can’t be dialyzed at the dialysis center of their choice. They don’t get to choose those terms of their dialysis, only whether they will or won’t dialyze. So we get court orders to dialyze them. Or if an inmate refuses insulin, we can’t do much, unless/until it becomes acutely life-threatening. I’ll stop there for now, as we’re in danger of having another rational discussion breaking out here in the pit! ---

If you’d like to read the tale, I’ll do another thread. My 4yo nephew has a problem with one of his urethers. When you’re that small, the medical sounds can be used to check beyond the bladder itself, and that’s one of the tests his doctors have been known to perform on him. He identified the word “test” with that specific one; we suggested to his parents that when there is any kind of “test” coming up, it may be best to be more specific, because I’d be running around yelling if I thought someone was about to stick a metal probe up my weenie and beyond, too… and I don’t even have a weenie. ---
