Obviously the question this fellow should _really_ be concerned about is whether or not he’ll be eaten first. But noooooo. When the Elder Gods descend and madness ensues, he’ll be all whining about slowly being driven insane. In all seriousness, I think he needs to be warned. It’s not too late. ---

Unfortunately, this sort of thing is not far from my experience with Fundamentalist Christians. I’m pretty committed to freedom of speech, which admittedly protects even the most obnoxious proselytizing. Still, I wish the damn campus preacher would stop telling me I’m going to hell. I really think that Fundamentalist Christianity would do a lot to improve its image if y’all took a stronger stance amongst yourselves against this kind of obnoxious behavior. Bosses don’t want to deal with it, both due to the notorious litigiousness of the Fundamentalist community and out of a feeling that people’s free speech is important enough to merit some extra protection. Unfortunately, much of the time it seems to be more important than everyone else’s right to peacefully enjoy their day. ---

I always get the biggest kick when a bunch of mutherfuckers who are supposed to be tolerant of other people’s views, heritage, and lifestyle start pitting them for it. I guess “Shut the fuck up” doesn’t get the point across? ---

The OP is not complaining that the nosey busybody in question doesn’t do any of the things he complains about himself. The OP is not saying that the nosey busybody MUST watch porn, drink beer, smoke and listen to 50 Cent. If the nosey busybody in question would simply stop inserting himself into co-worker conversations, conducted at an out-office breakspace, then the OP would have no complaints with him. Except for the attempted exorcism, of course… ---

You’re right, that made no sense. What I meant was I was wondering how upset the OP would be if I were blasting my music in my car in the parking lot? I play brutal death metal, and I blast it real loud. Would that bother him more or less than his coworker’s music? How I got from that to what I posted earlier, I’ll never know. ---

In a conversation I had today with cow-orker, he mentioned something about one of his aunts having been a huge fan of Elvis. You know the ones. China plates with the picture of Elvis on them, Elvis trinkets around the house, etc… Well, I guess she was in pretty great distress over his death. Just after he said that, he starts going on about how it isn’t right to idolize someone. I was like, ok, What isn’t right? He said something about it not being within “Christian values” to worship a person who isn’t God. And how humans should’t be considered a deity. I asked him what kind value is that? He didn’t really have an answer. She started explaining to him in a very polite manner (since he asked) what it said in the Qur’an, but I guess he didn’t like it. He took a little offense to what was being said, turned is head and lowered his voice about halfway, interupted and said “That’s insulting” _pause_ “…I find that very insulting.” His childish behavior of debate makes me laugh. I passed her in the hallway later, and jokingly (we get along) asked her how she liked his antics. She just laughed him off. 🙂 So I think he’s a Fundie. And as much as I’d like to say something to the supervisor about him always spouting this shit out of know where (…and you _know_ he’s right :rolleyes: ), I’d rather him just keep going. It’s more interesting this way. You just never know what’s he’s going to say next. What’s real sad though, is that his kids are still young and impressionable. ☹ ---

Try being openly gay around these people. Saying "I went to a movie with male name " when specifically asked “What’d you do this weekend” is essentially the same thing as saying “I like hot steaming cock” to some of them. Shortly after September 11 when, during a meeting, somebody asked my opinion on Jerry Falwell’s “gays/feminists/etc. made this happen” comment and I responded something to the effect of “That bloated old hypocrite” (something that lame). A Fundie in attendance took offense, made a complaint to HR and I was asked by a Dean to go to Sensitivity Training. I told her “I’d be delighted, reserve three seats for me… one for me, one for the ACLU lawyer I’m about to call [because if I can sit through countless testimonials and “ain’t God good?” lectures she can by God accept that I think Falwell’s a bloated hypocrite] and one for the reporter.” It was dropped. My all-time favorite Fundie in the workplace story, and I swear to Perhaps that I’m not embellishing. Some years ago I worked for a company that I won’t identify (I’ll only say that they handled **e** lectronic **d** ata **s** ystems for clients- you don’t have to be Hercule Perot… em… Poirot… to figure out which one perhaps) that was incredibly Fundie heavy. Every Halloween the e-mail practically jammed due to the “razors in apples” “Hi Fool, I’m Satan and you think you’re celebrating a silly holiday but…” type glurge, and though the HR team even sponsored costume contests to try and boost morale it was heavily fought by both managers and workers as offensive. Nevertheless, some of us heathens (many of whom were Christian) did dress up (maybe 10% of the workplace); one Fundie came in dressed as Jesus to protest. My boyfriend at the time came in very campy drag. He’d never done drag before in his life- it was totally a Halloween lark- pink boufant wig, cheap dimestore one piece, hose, etc… It was hysterical. His manager, a she-Fundie, ordered him to go home and change. He refused, as it the memos were very clear that Halloween costumes were allowed. She elevated the issue to her managers, denouncing it as “immoral” and “promoting a decadent lifestyle” and just generally evil. Here’s the punchline: when she did this, she was visibly pregnant with twins. She was unmarried. The babies father was her immediate superior. He _was_ married. He was also a minister. His wife was pregnant also. He already had one son out of wedlock by a former member of his congregation. Later her babies were born, she sued her boss/baby daddy (she claimed he had promised to divorce and marry her) _and_ the company (case dismissed), he resigned for “health reasons” (though everybody knew it was really the scandal), and the Fundie who dressed as Jesus was left by his wife when she found out he was having sex with her best friend’s husband (though neither of them were gay or anything). You have to give this to Fundies: their hypocrisies can be really fun in retrospect. ---

No religious dogma, never been to church, been actively chased down at work by a guy with a bible, quoting scripture. And you know what I did? Told him to shut the fuck up. And he countered with he wanted to anyway, so I said sure, go ahead, just stay out of my way. I figured if he could stay the fuck out of my way, I didn’t give a rat’s ass what he read. Why? Because I was tolerant of some guy who I totally thought was an asshole. I swear, since the election, when the left felt they were robbed by “fundies” who were driven to vote due to the immoral deficiencies of the left platform, the anti-religion faction just never lets it fucking die. But if I’m not tolerant of every fucking asshole, who has a belief different than mine, them I’m a fuckin bigot or extremist nutcase. And I’m sure as hell not telling anybody that they have to be tolerant, just to say “Shut the fuck up” now and then and quit fucking bitching. Approached by fundies at break? Say, “Shut the fuck up!” Anti abortion protesters ruining your lunch?? Say, “Shut the fuck up!” But damn. ---

Huh? This isn’t a matter of left or right, it’s simply about assholes. There are plenty of liberal batshit fundies out there perfectly capable of the annoying behavior displayed in the OP and several other posts in this thread. It doesn’t seem to me that Gabe is singling out the fundies, they’re just so numerous and invasive that it’s hard not to take notice. And why do they deserve tolerance when aren’t displaying any themselves? ---
