I protest!

Look! Shodan and I agree!

Unlike certain posters whose names I won’t mention in case their posting histories are also on double-secret probation, I rarely if ever delve into other peoples’ posting histories. I’ve certainly never searched for Starving Artist’s posts. As I noted above, I have three prior warnings. I don’t recall complaining about any of those,* and a check of the list of threads I started in ATMB indicates my memory is not faulty. So why would I start pissing and moaning about this one? Or point out that the warning is unjustified and that the underlying rule is silly?

I only ask because you seem to be able to read my mind, and I don’t want to lose the benefit of your insight.

*one was for calling another poster an idiot outside the Pit, which seems about as trifling as can be.

First, I admitted no such thing, and you ought to be warned for mischaracterizing my post, sir. I was “attacking” Starving Artist solely by reference to posts he’s made. That is the specific dividing line between what’s okay and what isn’t.

Again, show me where I insulted him. Did I call him a rude name? Did I say something that wasn’t true? Or was I just a bit flippant?

I blame GrandWino for mentioning warnings, which clearly jinxed the whole thing.

It’s a fair cop.

Is this rule listed in any of the forum stickies? If it’s not, it’s pretty unreasonable to expect that every poster should know about it.

The paper towel tube thing?

I bet a lot of people just found out about it because RNATB got a warning for it.

I have about half the OP’s number of posts, but that’s still a lot of posts, and yet this is my first inkling that it’s against the rules to mention paper-towel tubes. Whatever the controversy involving that, it certainly escaped my notice. I had no idea. The warning should be rescinded.

I did know we’re not supposed to mention that guy who signed on here to threaten to sue the Board for ridiculing him, but paper-towel tubes?

As someone said upthread, anyone who’s been around the board long enough to know to use the paper towel tube thing as an insult or as a way to goad me should know very well the subject has been declared off limits outside the Pit or the Paterno thread. There was much discussion of it in this forum and a lot of mod notes were given out in the various forums for a period of several months and sporadically since then. It strains credulity that a frequent and prolific poster like RNATB has never heard of it before.

I’m here a lot and I don’t get this reference. Of course, knowing me, I used to know all about it and have forgotten.

True- but every poster that knows enough about SA to launch a snarky personal attack mentioning the tube should know about it.

Attack the post. Don’t attack the poster. has been a long-standing principle on this board. Bringing up something which was completely off topic (and let’s be real - this had nothing relevant to the topic of Donald Trump’s campaign) was clearly an attack against Starving Artist.

I won’t mention his name (because that’s the point). It was a semi-famous person who had done something. A member of this board started a thread on the topic. The consensus of the thread was generally negative towards the semi-famous person and his actions.

The Chicago Reader and the SDMB then received a letter from the semi-famous person’s lawyers saying that the thread was defaming their client and the board would be sued if the thread wasn’t removed. After checking how much spare change was in the coffee can where they store the legal defense fund, the board decided to remove the thread and tell people not to start any new threads on this person.

It’s not. It’s basically against the rules to heckle SA about the issue . Mentioning whether or not to recycle them, or craft projects you can make with them, or which brand has the best- all OK. But in conjunction with SA/Rape/Paterno/etc- no.

Would you have made that comment? Can you make a comment like that in innocence of the whole SA/Rape/Paterno/etc issue? No. She knew damn well what she was doing.

I have only a vague knowledge that there was some guy named Paterno who was a child molester – he may have received a passing mention in the news over here – and had a thread about him, but I never participated in that thread. This really is the first I’ve heard of this rule, and I’m not being disingenuous.

Bringing up a poster’s stupid posts from another thread, even when at most tangentially connected to the current thread, has never been moderated as an insult.

ETA: If it’s off-topic, then it’s off-topic. People aren’t generally warned for being off-topic unless there has already been a note in that thread.

RNATB had a sex-change operation?

Right, sure, I believe you. But then, would you know to make the “flippant” post RNATB made? So, altho I am not a fan of “double-secret” rules, if you know enough about the issue to make “flippant” posts, then you will also know the rule.

Not something you could accidentally violate.

Meh. On a message board, no one knows what sex you are, even tho we are all fat white dudes with neckbeards posting in our Mom’s basement.:stuck_out_tongue:

It’s not necessarily true that someone would know about the rule even if he were aware of the controversy. Now I’m wondering if we’re not supposed to bring up the topic of sheep around a certain other poster.

baaa.
