I saw: _Snakes on a Plane_

I thought I was going to see: _Something good._
Hey, that fits the title for sure. Clever, too.

**28 Days** and **28 Days Later**. One is about shrieking beings crashing around in the woods and the other is **28 Days Later**.

Those are the movies I picked to start off [my only thread-spotted thead](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=294643&highlight=sequel) 😃

As for this OP, a lot of people, including the one I watched it with, thought **Pan’s Labyrinth** was a children’s movie…

A friend of mine complained about the Oscar-nominated film selected for his wife’s workplace’s outing was really awful. (IIRC it was rented and shown on a big screen somewhere.) He’d heard it was so good but everyone was horrified. Turns out that instead of renting the 2004 film [Crash](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375679/), about racial tensions in intersecting stories, whoever was in charge of getting the film must have gotten the 1996 film [Crash](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115964/), a David Cronenberg film about car crash victims who now find crashes to be sexually arousing.

My mom mentioned once that she and my dad had seen _Last Tango in Paris_ when it was in the theater, and there were a couple of little old ladies who’d thought they were getting an MGM style musical…

They didn’t stay too long.

Well, we didn’t know before but we know _now_ that \*Total Eclipse \* and \*Total Recall \* cater to totally different audiences.

_Sleepness in Seattle_ and _Insomnia_; wake up to the fact that one is lighthearted comedy, one is a dark, psychological drama.

When I went to see “A Boy and His Dog” [A Boy and His Dog (1975) - IMDb](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072730/) in 1975 there was a family that brought their young sons expecting to see a “A Boy and His Dog.” [A Boy and His Dog (Short 1946) - IMDb](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038379/)

Boy were they in for a rude shock. 😃

When I was a kid, someone recommended to my mother that she rent this great movie called [_The Goonies_](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089218/). When she got to the video store, she misremembered the name and ended up renting [_Ghoulies_](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089200/) instead. Mom was horrified–_Ghoulies_ was a 80’s horror movie which featured a bunch of little green demons popping out of toilets (In fact, one was on the video box, which should have tipped her off, but didn’t.)

My aunt rented [_My Life as a Dog_](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089606/), when my sister and I came to stay with her one time. She thought it sounded like the title of a family-friendly movie, but it turned out to be a kind of disturbing Swedish movie, and one of the scenes featured a kid who got his penis stuck in a pop bottle!

My grandmother once heard an ad on the radio, and she was pretty sure it was for “Neil Diamond Remembers” - figured it was a Neil Diamond concert with all oldies. (This was in the late 70’s or early 80’s?) She was a Diamond fan, and knew that my sister and I were too, so she called the number and got us all tickets.

They were for the Neil Simon play, “Brighton Beach Memoirs”. Good thing we all had a good time anyhow!

This happened with my dad when sent out to rent movies for the kids. The clerk at the video store set him straight. Unfortunately Goonies was checked out. The clerk instead suggested that he rent a new kids movie they just got in; “Toxic Avenger”

I went to a taping of The Colbert Report a few months ago and there was someone in the waiting area (before going into the actual studio) who thought she was there to see a tall black standup comedian named Stephen Colbert.

She was pretty surprised when her friends explained that Dave Chappelle would not be doing his act that night.
