I should probably ask Click & Clack

Yes I have a degree in chemistry and have picked up a little about cars working for automotive suppliers. Aside from general logical thinking, my professional life contributes little to this thread. My BS detector further developed in the years I managed a factory.

Stump the Chump.

Thats it. I guess this chump was stumped

Sometimes when they play Stump The Chump the answers they gave were wrong, but it was because the caller had only given them part of the information–presumably unintentionally leaving out details that proved wrong later.

I think the issue is just that their technical expertise is really out-of-date. They didn’t used to be nearly so bad, and when someone calls in with an older car they’re still usually pretty on the ball. I think they’ve pretty much been absentee owners of their garage since sometime in the 90’s though, and their ignorance of how newer cars work is pretty egregious. I think they should just stop taking calls for cars made after 1994 or so-- even if they did know their stuff, half the time the answer for a newer car is just going to be “hook it up to the machine and look at x y and z” which doesn’t exactly make for great radio.
