I suggest you try [eu.undernet.org](http://eu.undernet.org) as your server. It’s somewhaty better than the US. ---

If you go to [http://www.undernet.org](http://www.undernet.org), you’ll see an announcement as to what the problem is. Undernet is under all sorts of Denial of Service attacks, and is having lots of issues… making life difficult for those of us that enjoy IRC. ---

Hey friedo, if your company firewall allows ssh through, you can use it to establish a connection to an outside irc server. I have been using ssh to allow me to connect to my work computer from home through the firewall with quite satisfying results. Your sysasmins may not approve of this though, so not a good thing to call attention to. ---

It’s not Undernet’s fault that little, barely pubescent shitheads from Romania are DoS’ing Undernet. This happens far too often. If Undernet has a Death Penalty like USENET does, they should apply it to Romania until the authorities there actually do something about it. I’m really surprised that the Gigaswitch owners don’t just kill off Romanian packets anyhow, if like _The Register_ reports “hundreds of megabytes per second” are flooding from Romania to the Undernet servers. Oh, and sk8? Before you gripe too much about #straightdope, remember this? From Dec 3? “sk8rixtx: Little bunny \*\*\*\*\*\*, humping all the field mice…” and of course many other things too, which need not be posted here. I’m sure you remember the day, when a certain Board “celebrity” couple showed their true inner selves in chat. There are lots of ways to make chat unpleasant and terrible for people, even with no lag. What you say hurts people. But then, we are not supposed to discuss #straightdope here… ---

So why does the channel have to be on undernet? Why can’t we just log onto … I dunno, dalNET or something, and type #straightdope in the channel text-box? Simple, no? Or are there other things that would need to be taken care of?
