The major flaw is what Ferris does with his day off. Visit the Exchange? Attend a ball game? Dine at an expensive restaurant? Singing in a parade? Huh? These are the writers idea of a great day, not a kid in high school. Driving a great car and hanging around a pool with his hot girlfriend are the only bits that ring true.

Eh, I don’t have a problem with that. He’s not a typical kid, and it’s the ninth time he’s cut school for the year and maybe his last blast before college, so he wants to make a big production out of it. It’s not like this is a movie that’s shooting for realism - I mean, for starters he hacks into the school computer system because, you know, all computers are magically connected.

I think the Cameron emo sections that ring hollow to some now have to be taken in their original context. For the target audience (80s teenagers), they were spot-on.

For the sake of context:
I hacked my school computer system back in the 80s. The initial hack was on-site, but I added a modem to the system so that I could access it from elsewhere. I also tampered with the AC/heating control system and arranged a number of means of illicit physical access to the school.
Don’t worry–I only used my powers for good. Really!
It would have been very easy for me to dislike Ferris, but I never did. I suppose it’s partly because I identified with some of his antics, and partly because there didn’t seem to be any malice in him. With his apparent gift for schemes, deceit, and manipulation, he could have been a spectacularly cruel bastard, but he mostly seemed to be trying to have fun with his friends. The fact that he was declared popular with any number of “outcast” groups in school suggests that he went out of his way to be kind to all his peers, which says a lot for a teen.

That sums it up nicely. On the hacking part, it was much simpler to hack into computers back then.

Rather than nitpick a fun movie, I’ll just say that I don’t think this is what happened in the film. It’s a case of the computer as a magic box.
