So you buy one, get one free. And since they’re both free in reality, what’s the problem?

> Sorry, this is flat out not true. Gmail does not do this automatically. Maybe you found a setting to make it automatic, but you must have sought it out and switched in on. I’ve never looked for such a setting among all the settings in my gmail account, so I know have haven’t switched anything related to it either on or off. And my account does not add any new addresses to my contact list unless I tell it to.

Well, then we are at an impasse because I’ve never played with my gmail contact settings and mine is currently set to “When I send a message to a new person, add them to Other Contacts so that I can auto-complete to them next time” and not “I’ll add contacts myself”. I suspect that they’ve had different defaults over the years and accounts obviously stay with the defaults that were set when they were created.

The problem is that I think you’re concerned about something that is pretty much a non-issue - I’m sorry you got a couple of LinkedIn emails, but if you mark one or two of them as spam, they should go to your spam folder in the future and that ought to be the end of it. I am not sure that having the other mods create extra emails prevents a freak accident from occurring. And you can create a Straight Dope email account, as some mods and many posters have done. I think it’s very unlikely you are getting any other emails as a result of your correspondence with the mods or other Dopers. You are in my gmail contacts, by the way.

I give you 50% credit, because the automatic contact feature (that I was unaware of) only applies to outgoing emails, not incoming. In fact the language from your cite suggest it is not possible for incoming mail to be automatically added, until you send something back.

But I do appreciate the info that there is an automated system for outgoing emails in gmail. I will look for it and disable it, in case my contact list gets hit sometime.

Also, my email address that was spammed was a yahoo email. Ed isn’t in my yahoo account, so there is not (or maybe was not at the time) an automatic addition to the list from outgoing emails.

…there is no need for you to be so snarky: especially when you’ve been proven wrong.

People being added to your contact list is a largely automated process with many email providers. You do it differently. We get that. But it will be very hard for you to opt out of a largely automated process. If you interact with someone via email you are likely being added to a contact list. Ed has done the decent thing and removed you from his contact list at your request. To request that all the mods do this to all SDMB members in their contact list is unreasonable and unrealistic.

If you’ve read carefully, I gave up on that idea a while ago. Now I’m just asking for mods to use a email address dedicated to their SDMB work that they won’t also use on other sites. And if they have Doper contacts added to these addresses, they won’t be vulnerable to being swiped at some other site.

And I was proved partially wrong, and so were you, because the site you linked to only applied to outgoing mails, not incoming. And there is no setting at all to automatically add addresses from incoming email.

I apologize for the 50% comment, which I did not intend as snark, but as a statement of fact.

Also, since I never enabled or disabled this feature, I just looked into my settings and see it was disabled, which must have been the default setting when I opened the account. Which was very recent, in October of last year.

…I stated that “When you exchange emails with someone, invariably you go into their contact list.” That statement is not partially wrong.

From the [Registration Agreement](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/faq.php?faq=vb3_board_faq#faq_sdmb_rules).

> [@SDMB](#):
>
> You are required to submit and maintain a valid e-mail address. If you do not wish to receive e-mail from other SDMB users you may so indicate in your user profile. However, we retain your e-mail address in our database and reserve the right to have SDMB staff contact you. We won’t give or sell your e-mail address to bulk mailers, brokers, or similar entities.

In the terms of that agreement, **Ed** gave **Boyo Jim’s** yahoo email address to [linkedin.com](http://linkedin.com), which I would describe as a “similar entity.” It’s a clear violation of the registration agreement. In my opinion, it’s entirely appropriate for **Boyo Jim** to ask the powers that be to take a minute to be sure that it won’t happen again.

Yes it is. It is only entirely correct if both parties are using gmail, and as I noted, my default setting was to not automatically add contacts. Perhaps, as noted above by someone else, the default settings have been different during different time periods. So maybe someone with an older, or even newer for all I know, account, had the autofunction enabled rather then disabled by default.

And, to be clear, neither Ed nor I were using gmail when our email exchange happened. I was using yahoo. I’ll leave it to Ed to make any comments he wants to make about his email service, then or now.

On edit: I meant this in response to Banquet Bear’s last post.

No, **Enginerd** , I don’t think LinkedIn is not the kind of site being described there. And the SDMB didn’t sell or give **Boyo Jim** ’s email to LinkedIn. **Ed Zotti** allowed LinkedIn to access his email contacts by accident, and he was not acting in any official SDMB-related capacity.

I’m not sure I even get what **Boyo** wants.

Is it for the mods to get email accounts they use for nothing other than the Dope so that if one were to email them you won’t be on the contact list of an account being used for other things?

If so: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. There’s a whole wide world of things to complain about, man.

No, it was given by an SDMB admin who had it only because he had corresponded with **Boyo Jim** while acting as an SDMB admin. That’s a distinction without a difference.

…no it isn’t. You were wrong about gmail. You may well be wrong about yahoo but I’m not going to do your work for you. Regardless: you are missing the point. Having a big contact list updated everytime you interact with someone is normal and acceptable behaviour and for some people its the default behaviour despite your shock and surprise at this detail.

What, this promise only applies if the SDMB server gains artificial intelligence and goes finding other servers to give information away? How can it mean anything but “our staff agrees not to give it away” and by staff that means you and Ed and all the mods, even if you are not _paid staff_.

I sent an email about SDMB business to Tuba Diva, at the address published by her on SDMB, and she forwarded it to Ed because she didn’t feel qualified to answer. Ed then contacted me directly. All of this was directly related to SDMB business, and I still have those emails. I don’t know exactly when in the chain I got added to his list, it might have been before or after Ed actually sent me an email because he got it from somewhere else.

Nevertheless, Ed is certainly staff, and he gave away my email, though we all agree that it was not deliberate, nor personal.

…good luck with that in court. The system that Boyo Jim used to email Tubadiva is the same system any user can use to email any other user in this forum. It is external to the database mentioned in the registration agreement.
