His in depth study is pretty hard to argue with (despite what the creators themselves have to say about the matter. I mean come on: > smoke on the water = fallout > fire in the sky = mushroom cloud > How much more clear can they be, dudes? (students)? > gambling house = wagering upon survival of mankind Admittedly, it’s hard to argue against the eminent knowledge and learned authority of a Middle School teacher, so who knows, maybe there was a deeper metaphorical meaning layered over the seemingly obvious lyrics about “some stupid with a flare gun”, like some exquisite, uhhh…thing with layers. But I don’t think Deep Purple was really all that…deep. ---

Everyday is like Sunday by Morrissey. Though I was always unsure whether it was wishing for a nuclear war as an alternative to hanging out in a grim Northern seaside town or was meant to be about a grim Northern seaside town that escaped being nuked during a nuclear war, but carried on being grim. But, leaning back to my OP…don’t you all think its a great genre? Very varied, very sardonic and filled with black humor. ---

The Postal Service - We Will Become Silhouettes. Oddly enough it was subtle enough at first that I didn’t get what it was about but when it was pointed out to me it flipped 180 to being heavy-handed instead. But it’s still a good song if you like this type of music.
