I joined a meetup group for people with dogs and have been talking to one of the “main” people (not the organizer, just someone who has been with the group for awhile). We got to talking about our dogs and the person mentioned theirs looks like a Polar Bear, I mention that people think mine looks like a wolf and got this response.

> Your dogs sound very interesting. Hell on earth to me would be having a boring dog…This will be for you to figure out but there is a “regular” in our dog club who told me her dog is half wolf. If city of NB finds out they will kick it out of town. (it is white & not signed up for canyon lake). I read an article in the NY times ys ago that Anatolians had the most wolf DNA of any dog as it is a thousands of years old breed. Don’t know if it’s true but it sure has helped me with that crazy, stubborn dog: Oh, it’s a wolf! OK…And I completely changed the way we interacted & trained her. 1st left her with those large aggressive dogs like rotties and german shepherds for a wk or 2 and then they actually had her eat real chicken out of my mouth to bond with her, since she was not treat trainable to get her attention so I could train her and keep her from ripping my skin and clothes off. She literally ate this 120 house and every tree up. It’s been a long, crazy ride since she was 2 months old. 6 yrs of missing time living the moment with that crazy, yes, I swear wolf! but it was 6 yrs that needed to go missing. She literally saved my life by getting me out of the nightmare movie I was in and focusing on us. I would never do this again but would not take a million $ for the experience.

What’s strange is she started out coherent and then BAM that happened. Her other posts had good grammar and spelling and made sense. This all happened between 9:30 and 11:00 in the morning.

Making a few assumptions about some of the references (e.g. I assume canyon lake is a trip organized by this group), I can follow all of it. It’s definitely stream of consciousness, but it’s understandable.

Sigh. Lots of missed punctuation chances in there, but I agree that it’s mostly stream of consciousness going on. The only sentence (?) that truly puzzled me was… “She literally ate this 120 house and every tree up.” What is a 120 house? And did she mean that she ate every tree up from the ground? Or what? Color me confused.

No, she’s fine now, or nearly so. it sounds like she was in an abusive (personal, employment?) relationship that she left around the time she got the dog, and focusing on training her (the dog) helped her (the human) through the grief period, of six years. Or had the dog for six years before she left, maybe.

Also, I have my dogs take treats from between my teeth occasionally to reinforce our relative status.

Of course, people are crazy about their dogs.

I have no idea on that one.
Wall-O-Text and Stream of Consciousness writing makes it hard for me to process what I’m reading for some reason.

Tell me about it! I just left a group where a woman had a birthday party for her dog and tried to take over the area that someone had reserved for their human child’s party. I thought it was going to end in blows!

120 year old house, I assume.

The dog ate up the 120 year old house and all the trees. I think. I don’t use that contruction, “eat up”, that way, though.

A lot of folks are typing on their phone. Which produces all sorts of dropped word or substituted word errors.

Plus the fact folks on phones tend to write as if they were talking; all stream of consciousness and punctuation free.

Burn them and their dog I say.

I know diddly squat about dog training. But ISTM that having the dog take treats from you would sure seem to reinforce that they have status and you don’t. Which is probably the opposite of the message you ought to be sending.

May I have some enlightenment please?

The single best way to control your dog is to make her wait for a command to eat; letting her take it from my teeth is a bonding moment.

I am the source of all food; I decide who will eat and when and how much; I am the alpha.

S/he who controls the food controls the dog.

I’m pretty sure that mouth-to-mouth interaction with your dog is not a necessary nor even recommendable mechanism of training. If you have come to the alternate conclusion, I would suggest that you have overthought the issue.

Training? Noooo, I think we’d all agree it’s best to do this with a dog already well-trained and quite clear on who makes the food allocation decisions.

And it’s not mouth to mouth, and you don’t really want to display your teeth, and this is not the first stage in training …

If anyone is interested:
Only try this AFTER the dog is trained to obey commands for food and to wait for permission to eat
Make the dog sit, hold the a treat loosely between your teeth with your lips closed, and lean toward the dog
Don’t bare your teeth, don’t let her come to you, and don’t use steak.

If s/he over reacts a bit, hold her snout, roll her on her back, and tickle her belly.
