I think I need a Slap Chop

For me clutter is an issue because my kitchen is tiny (as was the kitchen before it). I have only 2 drawers and maybe 8 cabinets, only one 4 foot long counter that serves as workspace, and a lifetime of kitchen supplies and a large family to feed. That was another issue and how the choppers became clutter as opposed to replacing food processors/choppers. I cook for at least 6 and usually more every meal. With 4 of those being teenagers, that’s a ton of food and a ton of chopping. I never need to do just a small bit of onion or one or two eggs, etc. When I am chopping, I am doing a bag of onions or a dozen eggs, or pounds of tomato, etc.

The Slap Chop (I actually liked the Pampered Chef version better) is okay for very small amounts of a few things, but doing more is a pain. And those pieces that come apart easily for washing are fine too and not too much trouble once or twice but annoying when it might get misplaced (my dishes are unloaded by the aforementioned teenagers and things rarely get put in the same place twice) or needs to be cleaned between jobs for the same meal…my full size food processor and my mini chopper can easily be rinsed out between chopping jobs with little or no disassembling and as you mentioned are multi-purpose. Anything with more than two pieces to keep up with is just too much trouble for me. Even all the attachments for my Kitchen-Aid and food processors are never more two pieces at a time, if they weren’t multi-functional I’d probably be de-cluttering them too.

“Useless” might be a bit of an overstatement as it does have a limited use, and does fine if you need half an onion or a handful of pecans or something, but I definitely consider it a waste of money as there are a hundred other things out there that do it better, easier and for less money.

Hmm, the Pampered Chef hand chopper is reviewed highly on Amazon and epinions. The Slap Chop, not so much. I think I should buy it.

I have something like that - I don’t know if it’s a Slap Chop or not - and I use it a couple of times a week. Mostly for small things like mincing garlic. I like mine. I had a couple before that were slightly different versions of the same thing, but this one disassembles and cleans easier than what I had before.

I’m not sure if it’s this that makes me an asshole, or if it’s something else…

That explains a lot, actually.

I failed to add in my first post that I have used a Slap Chop knockoff (though it did separate for cleaning, unlike the knockoff shown in the commercial). It worked, though the novelty wore off quickly.

Never found the things useful myself. Between the knives, the prep processor and the Cuisinart, I’m good. All the Slap Chop does is chop, and I can do that pretty quickly with a 5" santuko.

Wow. Thanks for the input everybody.

I am just (re)starting to discover the joy of cooking. I was considering this. Thanks for your experiences.

Not that I need *help *being an asshole; I am quite capable of doing it on my own, thank you very much.

I think it would be unsafe to operate the Magic Bullet while wearing a Snuggie. You’re going to have to choose one or the other.

I won’t say how I know this, but the snuggie comes with the coolest freakin’ booklight. I mean, I haven’t noticed that they show it in the commercial, but it is like some kind of robotic type star trek contraction that opens like a robot but is eerily silent. Love it.

You mean this? Haha.

So I think I’m either going to get the Pampered Chef thing or a mincing knife. Hell, I’ll just get both and decide which one is easier to deal with. Reaching for maximum laziness here.

Oh yes. If I need to chop a bunch of stuff up really finely, I use the chopper bowl that came with my stick blender. Easy to clean (probably MUCH easier than that Slap thing), plus it blends and whisks and can chop liquid items. I’ve got mine for 6 years and the bowl is showing some wear, but it was only 15 euros.

Otherwise, I just use a knife. I hate washing up.

I have the pampered chef version and freaking love it! I cut onions in quarters and can dice half of it at a time. It does not do “soft” foods well at all (tomatoes, etc). but onions and peppers it handles nicely.

Yeah, but it’s friggin useless… you can’t get the light to actually shine where you need it unless you hold it in your hand! Err, or so I’ve heard…

Perfect! I’m pretty much only dealing with onions, peppers and potatoes. Vegetables I currently have at home are white onions, red onions, green onions (I like onions), jalapeños, red bell peppers, cucumbers, broccoli and probably something else that I’m forgetting.

I bought the Pampered Chef version at a friend’s party under duress, and it is a useless piece of junk. Maybe they gave me a dull-bladed reject, but that thing is more likely to make mashed onion innards connected by stringy parts in one big clump than actual diced onion.

Now that you have reminded me of it, I really need to bring it to the swap shop at the dump and foist it on some other unsuspecting chef.

Interesting indeed. The Pampered Chef chopper has been getting mixed reviews in this thread, but seems to be universally liked when looking at other online ratings, and is viewed far more favorably than other vegetable choppers. It seems to run for an extra $10 than similar products, but I’d say shelling out a whopping $30 is worth it if the product works well.

What about a mandoline? More versatile and a well made one will last forever. You just have to watch out for your fingers.

Always, always, always use the food holder when you mandoline something.

Ask me why I know this.

So uhh, why do you know this?

I think a mincing knife should work well for what I want. Slicing is the easy part for me, so a mandoline might be a neat gadget to have, but it won’t really do anything about my need to cube and/or mince.

My aunt took off the tips of three fingers when she let her attention wander whilst mandolining some veggies.

Ouch. Ruined the dinner, too.

I was expecting you to say something like you nicked your finger once, or you bled into the carrot sticks or something. Not that!
