Here’s what I’ve always wanted to know with regard to “Hi, Opal!”: In the MST3K Short “The Home Economics Story,” there’s a scene where a woman is working with fabric to make a dress, and when she comes out of the dressing room wearing it and turns the corner to face the stairway, Joel says, “Oh, hi, Opal.” The episode this was featured in was made in the early-to-mid 90’s; 1994 is my best guess. He couldn’t have been referring to the Straight Dope Board on AOL, could he? Is there another pop culture reference I’m missing? Did our “Hi, Opal!” come from that? Was it a non-sequitur? ---

Ah, I feel better. I was starting to think I was the only one that heard him say that. There could be a character named Opal… I never paid very good attention. The dialogue is very stilted and bizarre at times… “I’m going to become a chef [or something to that effect]. (turns head, looks thoughtful) Really, I am!” 😕 ---

You know it could be that **Phlosphr** is actually John Mayer, and he’s just concocting this whole thing to see what type of things we have to say about JM, since he’s not exactly a talked-about subject here. All kidding aside, some celebs do want to know what the public thinks of them, and the Internet is a useful tool for this purpose. I used to read the Howard Stern newsgroup, and there was a thread about Rodney Dangerfield’s appearance on a recent show. Apparently, Jackie “Joke Man” Martling had borrowed $1000 from Dangerfield in the past and never paid it back, but didn’t say anything about it, and didn’t even say hello to Dangerfield when he entered the studio. After the interview, Howard eventually found out about it, called Dangerfield back into the studio, and everybody roasted Jackie alive for being such a weasel about it. Martling said he DID pay Rodney back. IN JOKES. I posted on the thread that if Jackie had just gone ahead and told everybody at the beginning of the interview “When I was starting out in my career, Rodney loaned me money to help me out, and I’d just like to say Thank You Rodney” he wouldn’t have got his balls burnt so bad. I got an e-mail from Rodney Dangerfield himself thanking me for the comment! A friend of mine thinks he might have done a search for his name and came across my post. ---
