# I use the Gilette Fusion razor & it's pricey. Should I consider one of these "shaving clubs"?

> Yeah, there seems to be resurgence of interest in DE razor shaving from the vinyl-record-playing, fixed-gear-bicycle-riding online hipster contingent - but there’s a reason practically everyone switched away from it as soon as an alternative came on the market.

Most of those people have beards now.

Personally, I switched to using a double-edge razor about five years ago because it was cheaper. For whatever reason, cartridge razors don’t last more than a week for me before they become really scratchy and uncomfortable, and I just got sick of spending the money.

I shave in the shower and don’t bother with any of the stupid badger hair brushes or fancy scented lotions. It took a while to get used to it and learn the best technique, but now I find a DE razor is more comfortable to use and results in a better shave in the same amount of time compared to a cartridge razor. The key is to use a very sharp blade. There are lots of really cheap DE blades out there, that just make it a miserable experience. Feather-brand blades work best for me.

When I travel, I sometimes end up using a cartridge razor because the TSA apparently prohibits DE blades in carry-on bags. Multi-blade cartridge razors like the Gilette Fusion are definitely a bit smoother and less sensitive to technique than a DE. But until the cartridges cost [$0.25 apiece](http://www.amazon.com/Feather-Razor-Blades-Hi-stainless-Double/dp/B004RWTQTS), I’ll stick with my DE razor.

> Here’s a hint: Some of the “shave clubs” actually buy their razors from [Dorco](http://www.dorcousa.com/).
>
> You can buy directly from Dorco without signing up for any clubs or making any commitments. Try one of their “frugal” packs or “combo” packs and see if you like them. If you don’t, there’s nothing to cancel and they won’t send you any more razors unless you order them.

Another vote for Dorco. I get mine there. And I think they’re the source for the Dollar Shave Club products.

The cartridges are pretty good. I find that their four-blade cartridge gives me the same shave as my Mach 3 used to, at something like a quarter of the price.
