> And not cheering at concerts? Wow. You must hate going to see live music.

You mean, going to see drunken idiots scream out things in the middle of songs just to get attention? Thirteen year old girls that have to scream their heads off at their favorite line thereby drowning out MY favorite line? Yeah, what a vital contribution to the experience that is.

I think a lot of artists agree with me. Noise in between songs is awesome. Noise during the song, thus making it impossible to hear the song, sorta sucks. I mean, it’s fine when it’s a punk show or something where you’re not worried about intimacy or volume. But in the middle of folk songs? In the middle of dialouge during a movie? How is that not just as rude as this kid talking during the movie? Just because more people are doing it all at once?

Almost 1000 posts without starting a thread? I wish **Isabelle** had that kind of restraint!!!

Well… yeah. “Polite” is entirely a matter of convention. If the majority of the population think it’s polite to spit on your shoes, then it’s polite to spit on your shoes.

Anyway, I think we were thinking about different types of concerts. Obviously, the standards of behavior at a White Stripes show is not the same as those at the Boston Philharmonic. When you said concert, I immediately thought of the former, not the later. I can’t remember the last concert I went to where it was physically possible for the audience to drown out the performer. Sorry for the assumption.

Well, Ani DiFranco shows and Tori shows, yeah.

Zepplin CAN’T be drowned out. But then, most Zepplin fans don’t pee their pants and scream out “I love you! you withered old fossil!” when Plant starts going on about Hobbits. Ani fans, on the other hand, seem to think that saying “fuck” is an incredible transgression worthy of screaming their heads off while Ani does something really new and cool that no one else can hear.

That wasn’t half as bad as the part where Arwen, who turns out to be Sauron in disguise, picks up the reforged sword and stabs Aragorn thru the heart. Talk about gratuitous plot tampering violence!

Hang in there, **BC**. You have something to look forward to that is in the past for many of us now.

How’s your blood pressure? Ever since I read that damned Discovery article, every time I get a twinge in the back, I think “aortic dissection”.

I once watched “Bird on a Wire” on an airplane while suffering from sciatica. I’m not sure which was more painful – the sciatica or the movie.

I was all set to congratulate you on your literary integrity, too. 🙂

Still, I think walking out would have been a little extreme. Like the curate’s egg, parts of the film were excellent.

Actually, almost every part of it was excellent…and as faithful as possible to the book IMHO.

My favorite part was when Frodo wakeboarded behind the Elven ship on his way to the distant shores. Oh, perhaps I’ve said too much. Anyway, I did think that for the theatrical release it dragged on a bit too long at the end.

Thanks for the good wishes, everybody – the docs think that it was probably pleurisy (good call, **don’t ask** ), but they haven’t been able to definitively nail it down. I’m doing fine, and go back to work on Monday.

My daughter saw the rest of the movie last night. The theater owner recognized her, asked how I was doing, and let her in for free. There’s a lot to be said for living in a small town.

I have forbidden her from even mentioning anything that happened after Aragorn and company rode into the Paths of the Dead. She’s about ready to burst. I’ve taken pity on her and so will see the movie tonight.

Oh, and **Biffy**? It was a Morgul-blade, and a fragment was working its way inward… 😛

So she didn’t tell you about when Bilbo wakes up, roles over in his hobbit bed and sees Gollum in the shower?

OK, I’ve seen the rest of it.

Aside from a couple of omissions (Saruman, the Houses of Healing, the Scouring of the Shire), there really isn’t anything to criticise. It’s simply brilliant.

Thanks for the good wishes, everybody.

The current thread on [What movie(s) have you walked out on?](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=230162) caused me to revisit this…

I’ve been to a pulmonogist, and his conclusion was that my episode was almost certainly a pulmonary embolism.
