Obviously, this depends on the bunny. Benny, my beloved bunny, laughs in the face of hot sauce. He sniggers at the feeling of electricity. A cactus jab does nothing to stop his bunny teeth.
However, plastic aquarium tubing around all the exposed electrical cords in the place, stopped him in his tracks.
I think bunnies are great pets - snuggly, fluffy, furry and they don’t make a lot of noise.
IIRC, the difference between rodents and lagomorphs is that rodents have 2 pais of teeth whil lags have 4. Also rodents chew up and down while lags also chew side to side.
Rabbits do that as a warning of threating danger (or what they percieve as danger). I had one bunny who did that (warned us) every time he heard a males voice (no men in our house). Once, contractors were fixing the siding on the outside of my neighbors house and the bunny almost went nuts, attempting to “warn us” all day.
I also had a female bunny who would do that to scare off the other bunny. she was quite nasty though.
I would recommend that you have money for a pet rabbit. It is very important that you nueter or spay your indoor pet, as this eliminates many negative behaviors (and eliminates a few funny ones as well, but it’s a trade off!)
In my personal experience, my attempt to incorporate guinea pigs with rabbits failed - they ignored or frightened each other. Also, rabbits can be litter boxed trained, whereas I was NOT able to litter box train my guinea pigs. This doubles the litter cleaning workload as you’ll be cleaning out an entire cage, not just dumping/scrubbing a litter box.
Rabbits chew - even my current NON-chewy bunny loves cords. Putting cords ‘up’ if possible works pretty well for me.
I currently only have one rabbit as he has had an extreme reaction during every introduction we’ve attempted. He is now, however best friends with our cat (whom we got as a kitten while the bunny was full grown). This was NOT something I expected to happen, I was expecting to have to keep the seperated for life.
The fact that they are BOTH socially troubled within their own tribes, yet friends with each other is kind of amusing.
I had a rabbit when I was 18, “Spot.” I bought her thinking she was one of those hyperintelligent rabbits that could be litter box trained. Turns out she was one of those evil rabbits that would only urinate and defecate where it had established I was most recently sleeping. I’ve litter box trained many a cat, but that rabbit was a wild mustang that couldn’t be caught, much less broken.
I got a bun last year from the Humane Society. Little B/W Lop named Mr. Oliver Pinklestein. At first, he was outside in a modified dog kennel with a two story hutch and ramp and such. He was fine out there of course, but then my hubby went on an extended business trip and now he lives under the kitchen table. Really. He’s got a litter box which he uses–but there are some stray poos once in a while, stays on the carpet and ventures onto the dog towels when they are laying about. Lives in a little box that he likes to chew through. Doesn’t chew on the wood chairs (thanks to my favorite diety). Is away from all the electrical outlets. Loves the dogs. Begs when you open the frig door. Is a whore for raisins. HATES being picked up and turned over for nail trimming and stuck poo cutting out (eww). Loves his head scratched, but not his anywhere else. So, I throw a towel over him before I pick him up and then keep him nice and tight while I do things. Luckily his nails are white and easy to trim – though, when I got him he had those claw covers on which scared the crap out of me.
Issues: water bottles! They all seem to be the kind that hang on the edge of the cage. Well, now mine is velcro strapped to a table leg. It falls sometimes, but the water crock kept getting tipped over and the dogs kept drinking all the water anyway. They also eat his food–which they don’t like by any means, but they do it regardless. I think it is revenge for when I wipe the dog paws he jumps all over them.
Litterpans - you need to change often. I have a great trick. While you can under NO circumstances place kitty litter anywhere the wabbit can eat it–it can KILL them. BUT–I have the cat litter pan with enviro-safe litter on the bottom, then I place a large sheet of packing paper folded under the sides, then a layer of hay on the top. Mr. Pink cannot get to the paper–which will absorb some of the urine will flow the urine down to the litter which I can flush. There is no smell unless you are cleaning the pan.
Go for it. Just don’t expect too much from them. They won’t be jumping in your lap for loving. They hate being picked up. They are not cats,. they are not dogs. They are cute wittle bunnies.
Yes? What? You rang? pravnik, Spot wasn’t spayed, was she?
I just want to reiterate a lot of what has been said here. Yes, rabbits can make great indoor pets.
They can be litter box trained.
They should be spayed or neutered even if you never intend to get another one…behavioral problems are reduced, and I have heard anecdotally that neutered rabbits tend to live longer.
Yes on timothy hay available at all times…in addition to being good for them, it helps reduce cord and carpet chewing.
No on regular cat litter for litterboxes…the stuff phall0106 mentioned sounds good, we have had good luck with Carefresh. You can buy it in bulk direct from the manufacturer and save a bundle.
We clip our rabbits nails ourselves most of the time. If you are observant and careful it can be done.
FYI the soiled Carefresh rabbit litter mixed in with their droppings and urine makes great compost.
The only thing I really disagree with is GorillaMan’s contention that their urine is nonstaining and odorless…our two rabbits have pee that stains like crazy, and smells pretty strong, definitely worse than people urine (we have a four year old). I have also heard that it can be irritating to the skin.
Last night, while visiting our local pet shop to kill some time, we visited all the animals up for adoption. (It’s better than the zoo, 'cause the adoptees are all sponsored by the local No Kill Animal Shelters–cats, bunnies, etc. and if the volunteers are there, you can help clean up and play with the animals.) Anyhoo…I fell in love. Her name is Valerie, and she’s a brown Lop eared bunny, who weighs about 12 lbs. (yep, she’s rather large) and has a beautiful personality. Adoption papers are in the works and we go Friday evening to pick her up.
Since I lost my Nicki several months ago, I’ve been very lonely for a bunny. We have two cats, but they’re not the same as a bunny. When I met Valerie last night, I felt at home. …Come on Friday… Tonight, I’ll drag the equipment (crate, water bottle, litter box, food bowl) up from the basement and give it all another good cleaning and disinfecting. I’m so excited.
IINM, rabbits can be worse than cats in terms of allergens. So if that’s a problem with you or regular visitors, be fore warned.
We had one growing up that we kept in the basement. He tried to chew through everything. He didn’t “attach” to people, even like a cat does.
He used a litterbox, but we just filled his food bowl and water dish every day. I don’t even know why we had him.
I really don’t see the point in having one.
Also, it’s fun to nail their ears to a tree, and then rip their lungs out with a claw hammer. You can inflate their lungs like balloons by blowing into them.
And I don’t see the point of posting this outside of The BBQ Pit. Maybe you thought you were being funny, but I don’t think anyone else here finds the torturing of small animals to be especially amusing. Do not post in this manner outside of the Pit again.
Now that you mention it, no, she wasn’t, and not only that, she seemed to get a lot more ill-tempered when it was “that time of the month.” I never thought about getting her spayed since she was a single white female and didn’t put two and two together that spaying might make a difference (c’mon, I was 18). It worked out, though, I gave her to a friend who kept bunnies.

Bunnies aren’t just cute like everybody supposes
They got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses
And what’s with all the carrots
What do they need such good eyesight for anyway
