# I want some fake paintings.

Copies, actually. Legal ones, of course. A Mona Lisa would be cool. I saw this bit on CBS news tonight about a “fake” art factory in China, and was reminded of a long held desire for some masters to hang all over my walls, 😉
Can anyone help direct me to a reputable site? I _am_ serious. I used to love watching _Sister Wendy_ on PBS.

The Louvre owns the original painting and has rights on the physical property. Copyright on Davinci lapsed a long time ago. Anybody can legally make a copy. This would be illegal only if somebody tried to pass off a copy as the original.
OTOH, Wyeth, Dali, and some others are still protected by copyright. If you, or anybody else, paint a copy of Construction Of Soft Boiled Beans (Premonition Of Civil War), you have violated the copyright.

Search for art reproductions and you’ll get tons of results.
One such shop is [Brushstrokes](http://www.brushstrokesdirect.com). They do reproductions and also add texture through additional brush strokes on the canvas, making it look more like a real painting (rather than a print or such). I’ve got a Monet done this way (and my mother’s purchased several others of various artists) and they’re really quite nice. Spendy, though.
They also feature their own current artists.

I’m (vaguely) aware of that, Doc. I wouldn’t want to rip anyone off. Not my style.
I’ve bought a couple of paintings from artists not yet discovered. 😉 Now I’d like a few old masters, and wouldn’t mind some talented “little guy” making some money from that.
I forgot to subscribe to my own thread. That should be a default. For the OP.

I like this one, but they are indeed pretty pricey. And no Mona Lisa. I’ll go back and look over their inventory some more.

You could just buy a poster & slap some decoupage on it, the surface will look like brush strokes (depending on how you wield the brush). Spend some money on the framing ($100-$200) & it’ll look legit-ish.
Copying per se isn’t illegal, it’s selling the work. Art students copy from museums all the time.

Roy Lichtenstein made a lot of his paintings as prints of four or five colours, using commercial paints. This means the reproductions for sale are practically the same as the originals. That cannot be said of almost any other reproduction painting, so I recommend a Lichtenstein.

IIRC Mona Lisa was done on a wood panel, not canvas.
I need to research it.

No, I have not. Sorry. A mall in Scottsdale has a store, “Genuine Oil Paintings” which I _have_ seen, though not bought from. The paintings there looked all right, certainly good enough to act as decoration. I googled the phrase thinking they might have an online store. Since the site doesn’t mention any stores, as such, I doubt there’s a connection between the two. If I can get up to Scottsdale in the next few days, I’ll ask 'em.

Thank you, We now have three working links. 😉 And right there, at the bottom of the article, is a link to a copy on [amazon.com](http://amazon.com). About $120 - $140, depending on the frame. I shall go back for more details ant to see what else they might have.
I learned all I know about the masterpiece from reading _The da Vinci Code_. 🙂
