After all, Kane didn’t lose Rosebud. It was tossed into the trash fire at his mansion after Kane died. ---

Kane felt his parents hadn’t loved him because they sent him away. So he spent the rest of his life looking for somebody who would love him unconditionally. This also shows that Charles Foster Kane was not just William Randolph Hearst. Hearst never lacked for maternal love; his mother doted on him and Hearst was fifty-five when she died. It was Welles who lacked close affection as a child. His parents divorced, his father was an alcoholic, his older brother was institutionalized, and his mother died four days after Orson’s ninth birthday. Welles would end up being sent off to boarding school. And the name of the man who became Welles’ guardian after his father’s death was Bernstein. Kane was a combination of Hearst’s public life and Welles’ private life. ---
