I want to network two computers using a serial cable

Biting the bullet and setting up actual network connections is the best bet in the long run. The current USB standard for maximum cable length is 5 metres (16 feet), while standard LAN cable can run up to 100 metres. Unless you plan to keep the two computers in the same room (or in adjacent rooms) permanently, network is the way to go.

Network has more future potential, as well. If you eventually add a broadband cable or DSL modem, keep in mind that it will use network cables to connect to your computer(s), so having your computers use network now saves you a lot of hassle later.
