And I don’t really know what else to say about it. I mean, I sort of knew this was coming…the firm isn’t doing that well, and the eeconomy sucks right now, but still…And now I have to try to file for unemployment, I have to look for another job, and I have to really seriously look at my financial situation. I’m sorry if this hasn’t been the most coherant thread…🙂 ---

Sorry to hear it, **Captain**. This shitty recession seems to just keep getting worse. Hope you can eel around the worst of it - best of luck with the job search. And I wouldn’t worry about complete coherence right away. Give yourself a chance to settle and sort for just a little bit, first. _Then_ kick yourself into gear :). ---

That sucks. ☹ What are your prospects for finding a new job? Could this be the time for a career change? Are you in a position to consider going back to school to learn new skills or hone the old ones? Try to think of this as an impetus to finding a better job. ---

I feel your pain – I was laid off last April and am still scraping by with unemployment and freelancing. There’s an ongoing support group [here](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=465572&page=12) – you can just jump in on the last page. Plenty of tip, advice, and help there (I know I’m not the only person who’s been helping others with their resumes) in addition to venting, bitching, and freaking out. ---

Sorry to hear about it. Our mega-corp is expected to announce big layoffs next week, and it’s a very profitable company. Nobody is immune from this shit. ---

I’m very sorry to hear that. I was laid off in September from a newspaper (an industry that, I’m sure you’ve heard, isn’t doing so hot) and I just started working again last Monday. One bit of advice: File for unemployment now. I lost a couple of weeks’ worth of unemployment because I waited too long. I don’t know where you are, but in Missouri, where I worked, you can file online. I never had to go anywhere in person until I’d been taking unemployment for a few weeks and needed to do the in-person check. So it might not be as soul-crushing as you fear. ---

My wife was laid off last July. In October, she was ecstatic that she found a job similar to her old one, at the same level of pay and with great benefits. But last week, for the second time in six months . . . yep. Back on the dole. And I’m job-hunting now, too. (At least I have a job. But my current company isn’t doing well at all either, and if something were to happen to my job, we’d reach DEFCON-5 financial status within a month. Losing the house, bankruptcy, the works.) Everything I hear, everything I read, says this recession is going to SUCK. ---

Sorry to hear that. Good luck in the hunt for a new job. On Friday of last week, I got a call from my manager – about 40 people were laid off from our company, and the rest of us will be out of a job by mid-July. Then on Monday, I got a call from my new manager – there’s a 10% paycut across the board for those of us who still have a job. This economy sucks! ---

It’s gonna be rough for a while, but hang in there. It will get better. ---
