Beats me as well. But that came from a thread where a limit of 3 minutes on any song was proposed IIRC - which blows most of my favourites out of the window as a real prog fan. :dubious:

I _love_ Con Air. The first time I saw it, I cried when Nicholas Cage was finally reunited with his wife and daughter.

And I hate Nickelback. Hate Hate Hate. Not because they’re popular, but because their songs are terrible. Nothing can make me change the radio station faster than hearing the first few words of “Rock Star.” And that lead singer’s scratchy voice…HATE!

> Olive Garden and Chili’s are both perfect when that is what I’m looking for. In defense of the tourists, it’s tough being in a strange place and not knowing which places will have what you want. I’ve been very dissapointed by going to little places that I thought would be nice. The Olive Garden and the like may be chains, but at least you know what you will get.

I came in here to say that I like Applebee’s for the same reason. Sure, when I’ve got time and am in the right mood (which is most of the time) I’d much rather check out some funky local place. It’s not like Applebee’s is OMG MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT and we have to go there all the time. It’s merely a comfortable fallback when nothing else comes to mind or seems to be available or convenient. They’re always open, service and food are consistent, and they have lots of booze. Some days that’s enough for me. And I’ve never gotten a half-frozen entrée or any of the other complaints I’ve seen here.

> Just my opinion but I think to many males, Sarah Jessica Parker gives off a “high maintenance” vibe that makes her physical appearance more objectionable. She just doesn’t seem to be attractive enough to be worth all the trouble.

I guess I don’t see how it’s any trouble at all to occasionally see someone on television who one would not want to date. It isn’t Sarah Jessica Parker’s job to be every man’s fantasy, and if her real-life personality is in any way unpleasant then the only man with any real obligation at all to put up with her is Matthew Broderick. I’m not saying any man should find Parker attractive, I don’t think she’s especially attractive myself, I just don’t see why it has to be a big deal that the woman isn’t that pretty. If it’s all supposed to be a joke then it’s one about as funny as a “No Fat Chicks” t-shirt.

I’ve seen Julia Roberts as the subject of similar abuse for daring to be a famous actress even though many men find her unattractive. I’m not sure what’s so difficult to grasp about the fact that even in Hollywood women do not exist for the sole purpose of being attractive to men. Both Parker and Roberts are famous because they/their projects are popular with WOMEN. Few women would have wanted to watch _Sex & The City_ if the part of Carrie had been played by Pamela Anderson. Maybe more men would have liked it, but there are plenty of other shows targeted at men that star implausibly sexy women.

PS: I really like the breadsticks at the Olive Garden, and I’m not ashamed of it either!

Never mind Cage - it was _totally_ Steve Buscemi’s movie.

And I like “Rock Star”. But not Sarah Jessica Parker.

For what it’s worth, I think she’s attractive too. (Of course, I think most women are attractive.) I don’t get the hate, either, but it might come from association with _Sex and the City_, which as far as I could tell was a pretty lousy show.

I like Sarah Jessica Parker as well. Someone tells me she has a face like a horse, I say I’m interested in meeting their horse. 🆒

But yeah, a lot of it comes from Sex and the City, I think. What I’ve seen of her in other movies seems a good bit different, those movies being _Footloose_ (country girl!) and _The Family Stone_ (Hillarious fight scene between the two grown brothers in that movie).

I’m another guy that loves the first StarShip Troopers movie. Yes, I have read the book too. Like 'em both. I even watch some key scenes from StarShip Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation, as a guilty pleasure (how can you NOT like the “Hey General!” scene at the climax of the film? :D) Still haven’t finished the third movie though, I have to confess I’m a bit overwhelmed by the cheeze-to-not-cheese balance of the movie (this one is like taking the first movie and covering it in gooey nacho cheeze).

Honestly though? Have you ever looked up Casper Van Dien? He’s not making these crappy movies (Dracula 3000 is another one of his films I love) because he needs to pay the gas bill. Dude’s loaded like Daddy Warbucks, and seems to be making these campy movies because he enjoys it. I wish _I_ could spend all of my time making sci-fi vampire flicks. 😃

Here’s one specific to the Dope: Everybody Loves Raymond. I love this show. This show and Frasier are two of my favorite sitcoms I’ve seen on TV. Watching these shows on TV with my dad and brother (along with Home Improvement way back in the day) is a cherished kind of family time for me. Oftentimes cause some of the characters remind us of heavily exaggerated versions of our own family members. The way some folks around here talk, you’d have to assume that the show was about Raymond kicking their dog.

Oh, and I like Olive Garden and Brussel Sprouts. I don’t get either very often (well, they serve Brussel Sprouts in the chow hall here, they’re OK). I also think Asparagus suffers from horrible naming, but is otherwise a delicious veggie if steamed and served with some pepper. I also like CAD and MegaTokyo (a comic which is updated so freaking slowly that they themselves have made jokes about it).

Oh, and one more. Diet Coke. _What?_ I like the flavor! Don’t judge me!

Did anyone say any different? The point is something you like that it seems like everyone hates, usually for no adequately explained reason. I never started hating those things in my OP just because “everyone” on t3h intarwebz said it sucks, it was more being baffled because “I was not aware I was supposed to hate that” and didn’t know “everyone” disliked it that much until I was well into the stuff.

I like _Everybody Loves Raymond_ well enough too. It’s not one of my favorite shows, but as far as family sitcoms go it’s one of the better ones of recent years and I’m happy enough to watch old reruns. Although the characters were exaggerated and mostly stock types, I think their interactions and problems had more depth than people give the show credit for. And it could be surprisingly edgy at times, like the episode where Ray’s mother made an abstract sculpture in her art class that resembled, shall we say, a Georgia O’Keefe painting.

My sister HATES _Raymond_, and would complain whenever our mother had it on. I don’t think someone who loved _Full House_ has much room to talk, though.

I don’t have any problem with people liking _Megatokyo_, but they must have the attention spans of Galapagos tortoises. I followed MegaTokyo for several years, but abandoned it when it became clear to me that not only was the story moving at a glacial pace, but that nothing was ever going to be resolved. Since they never even got around the doing the “Characters” and “Story” pages of the site, it was way too much trouble for me to try to keep up with. Maybe two years after that I was reminded of _Megatokyo_ for some reason and decided to take a look at it again, and as best as I could tell it was still the same DAY it had been when I last read the comic! And apparently nothing had been settled in that time either, not even the most trivial issues – I think it was still up in the air whether that schoolgirl was going to take art lessons from Piro.

Definitely. And yet it seems pretty evident that there are certain musical acts who seem to attract an inordinate amount of stupid fucking people (not disco, AFAICT, but if you’ve ever been to a “hard rock” concert, you’d probably find less MENSA members in a stadium full of those fans than you would at a small-club Sleater-Kinney or Yo La Tengo show).

Sorry, my post came across as a bit pompous didn’t it? 🙂 I wrote it after staring at my keyboard for about 5 minutes thinking what to write, and then realising that I just don’t know what I’m supposed to hate that I like because I don’t pay that much attention to the herd’s opinions on things.

I definitely agree that people who stop liking something as soon as it becomes popular need to be taken out and shot though, way to demonstrate you have no real sense of individuality and that you’re more influenced by other people’s thinking than the sheepish trend-followers you appear to be trying to distance yourself from.
