I watched Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within last night

What pissed me off is how they spent so much time doing some of the characters, and then totally blew others off. The marine chick, voiced oh so incongruously (is this a word?) by Roz from Frasier looked like one of those upscale sex dolls you can buy online. And almost exactly as articulated. Gr…

… and I saw them breathe a few times. Most of the time I couldn’t tell.

I’m still trying to figure out what the hell I just watched, though…

You know what would have been really cool? If, after they’d offed a couple of bad guys at one point, we’d heard the famous Final Fantasy victory music! I would have laughed my head off.

I liked the movie - I’ve never played any of the Final Fantasy games, but I have consumed a large quantity of anime and my ability to suspend disbelief is extremely well developed. Even so, it could have been so much better.

I felt like turning the DVD off after about 45 minutes. But I rarely do that because I figure I’ve already got so much time invested that I might as well finish it. I don’t think I’ve seen the use of Gaia is such a lame fashion since Captain Planet. Alien ghost? Sympathetic spirits? I found myself humming the theme to Ghostbusters as I watched the movie. I like animated films and that includes stuff from Japan. What I don’t like is when they pile on a whole bunch of new age crap. It just tends to ruin the movie for me.

On the bright side I really liked the animation and I liked the voice acting. Of course I may have just liked the voice acting so much because most of the time it really stinks.
